R.I.P. 2023 Tax Season! 2023? Huh? When you say "tax season," most people think of April, right? What you may not realize is: there are deadlines for various filings and extended filings, throughout the year. Beginning with March 15th (due date for many entity filings) and ending with October 15th, CPAs and their clients can be quite busy. Today was the drop-dead filing deadline for any individuals who had to extend their returns. Many - like a lot of our clients - had to wait til their business returns also got filed. The "second tax season" rush from Labor Day to October can get almost as crazy as April. Our team absolutely crushed it these past six weeks! Had to celebrate with a little cake ??.

On Monday, January 29th, the IRS officially began accepting 2023 tax returns via efile. Yay!? Not so fast. Here's a bunch of reasons you may not want to rush to file: *The obvious one: you don't have all your documents yet. Many brokerage 1099s won't be out until late February. Other 1099s arent even due until January 31st. *All returns must be efiled. So, whether it's you or your tax preparer, software is involved. You don't want your return to be the test case that reveals a bug. *Incredibly, Congress is talking right now about changing the rules of the game, retroactive to January 1 2023! Proposed changes are generally favorable and may impact: *Anyone who has a child *Businesses with R&D expense *Businesses with assets to depreciate. If changes go through and you've already filed...well, we don't know what happens! Bottom line? Don't rush. Need help? Reagan & Company assists individuals, families, and closely held businesses.
