Earlier this week, Benjamin Aneff - President of US Wine Trade Alliance sent a warning to its members to halt ALL shipment of wine, spirits and beer from the EU - citing the risk of tariffs being too high... He explained that the Alliance is working diligently to ensure any tariff enactment would have a goods-on-the-water exception, but the flat reality is right now there is no guarantee of an exception for goods in transit at the time of a tariff enactment. In his communication he also mentioned the following: "The disruption this would cause is not lost on us, and we do not take this recommendation lightly. To be clear, no federal register notice on this issue has yet been published, and it is possible either the U.S. or EU could pivot away from the current tit-for-tat, but at this moment there is a risk that goods could be tariffed if they arrive in the U.S. after the beginning of April. This is not a fight that we are responsible for, but it is a fight we are in nonetheless. We are speaking with agency staff and members of Congress every day, and will follow up with more information as soon as we have it." We can all agree that the disruption is not only real but will be significant, with restaurant owners and consumers ultimately bearing the cost of this self-inflicted and unnecessary trade war. In the meantime, the ban on U.S. wines and spirits in Canada is both drastic and severe, already impacting American producers. However, we fully support this measure, as decisive action is necessary to make the new administration grasp the consequences of its illogical tactics.

As you know, the US has initiated a trade war against the world and is now threatening to impose an additional 200% tariff on European alcohol. This alone could inflict significant and irreversible damage on an industry already facing an existential threat, as the growing anti-alcohol movement continues to vilify alcoholic beverages. The responsible and moderate consumption of wine – which is the way the overwhelming majority of wine consumers enjoy it – is being stigmatised by the removal of the distinction between alcohol abuse and the moderate wine consumption within a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Due to the dissemination of incomplete or biased scientific information and data, this restrictive vision is progressively impacting regulations around the world, ranging from the imposition of a disproportionate and unfair legal framework, such as advertising bans, restrictive fiscal policies, and health warnings labels, putting the sustainability of the wine sector and its rural communities at risk. In the face of this mounting challenge, a campaign in support of the culture and moderate consumption of wine has been launched by the CEEV - the voice of the EU wine companies via the VITAEVINO Campaign to give a voice to citizens, consumers, and the vast wine community. Pivotal to the campaign is this Declaration, which gives a voice to all consumers who enjoy wine in moderation around the world, and the wine communities who works diligently, responsibly, and passionately to develop and preserve the culture of wine by allowing them to register their support. Signing this Declaration is an important step in defending the legitimate and sustainable place of wine in our society and gaining recognition of the important socioeconomic role wine plays in our economy, rural environment, and in our culture. At Read Between the Wines, we are strong supporters of this campaign and are committed to playing a vital role in spreading its message and safeguarding our industry and culture. We have updated our website to express our unequivocal support for the campaign, and we strongly encourage you to sign the declaration. https://lnkd.in/gF6bdwaq #wine #wineculture #winemaking #vitaevinocampaign #vitaevino Felicity Carter Dr. Laura Catena Ignacio Sánchez Recarte Gaya Ducceschi

  • If you’re a devoted listener of the podcast—like nearly 40,000 others per episode—you’ll know we’re rather fond of championing the culture of wine and giving a firm nudge to the many dubious claims floating around that any drop of wine is apparently the devil’s nectar. Well, we’re only just warming up. Big things are on the horizon. Which brings us to an exciting announcement: very soon, we’ll be unveiling a special collaboration with the VITAEVINO Campaign and the CEEV - Comité Vins —yes, at least one dedicated episode, though let’s be honest, we’ll probably have far too much to say to stop at just one. So, stay tuned. The best is yet to come. In the meantime, please sign their petition - it's important and vital for our industry: https://www.vitaevino.org Cheers ?? #wine #podcast

  • Episode 70 is now out - and we return to South Africa for the first time in almost four years, and we do so in grand fashion—by visiting Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Owned by husband-and-wife duo Kathy and Gary Jordan, this estate is a benchmark of excellence, seamlessly blending tradition, science, and sustainability in winemaking. In this episode, we explore Jordan’s Timepiece Range, a tribute to their heritage and old vines, and discuss how Gary’s background in geology has shaped their vineyard’s unique terroir. Kathy Jordan shares insights on economics in wine marketing, while Gary reveals their bold approach to combat climate change, including pioneering plantings of Assyrtiko, Mencía, and Xinomavro. We also dive into winemaking as an art versus a science, the evolution of consumer preferences, and the challenges South African vintners face today—from climate adaptation to international trade barriers. Plus, an exclusive look at their UK project, Mousehall Country Estate, where they are crafting world-class still wines in England.?An inspiring conversation with two visionaries shaping the future of wine. Don’t miss it! #wine #podcast #southafrica #Stellenbosch #winery

Pourquoi Read Between the Wines ? • We are the curators of winemakers’ stories. Our raison d’être isn’t just wine; it’s the people behind it, the passion poured into every barrel, and the legacies sealed with cork and time. But before we uncork their tales, many ask: What’s our story? Why do you called your podcast Read Between the Wines? It all began not with a vineyard, nor with a vintage, but with a conversation—one that had nothing to do with wine. The original idea was simple: to talk to entrepreneurs about their journeys. Not their balance sheets, not their quarterly strategies—just their stories. But then, my passion took over and before I knew it, every road led to wine. Because, let’s be honest—winemakers are some of the most fascinating storytellers in the world. You see, wine isn’t just about what’s in the glass. It’s about what’s behind it. It’s about the land, the weather—it’s about the tension between tradition and innovation. It’s the reality that winemakers have just one single shot per year to get it right. And then, it’s about what Italian winemakers call “La Filosofia della Pazienza”—the philosophy of patience—something winemakers across the world understand deeply: waiting months, even years, to see if they were right. In wine, there is no instant gratification. This reality is cruel, but yet so noble. To truly understand a wine, you must look beyond the tasting notes. You must listen to the echoes of the vineyard, feel the weight of history in the bottle, and hear the unspoken words between the swirl and the sip. That’s what we do, we read between the wines. Between the rows of vines and the hands that tend them. Between the cellar walls and the silent dreams they hold. Between the barrel and the bottle, where time lingers and alchemy unfolds. Between the vine and the label, where identity is born. Because wine isn’t just something you drink. It’s something you read. This is who we are. Unmute your winery with us.
