This week we were delighted to welcome eight new content creator apprentices in our newsrooms on an 18-month programme to gain skills and experience that will help them embark on a career in journalism. It’s the culmination of our ‘Get Into Journalism’ programme with The King's Trust that saw 12 young people get a taste of journalism in our newsrooms in September and October. Congratulations to our content apprentices: Aakifah Gani, Charlotte Gosling, Josh Whorms, Mariam Haji, schannell kanyora, Shannon Miller, Tahira Ali and Taila Nichole Thompson. 'Rough: the stories behind London's homelessness crisis' is the name of a new project by journalists at MyLondon. The aim is to shine a light on the stories and people affected by the crisis: https://lnkd.in/e3tajrzX The team has been speaking to some of the city’s most vulnerable people sleeping in dangerous and squalid conditions in shop doorways, tents and under flyovers. From Maria, a 20-year-old domestic abuse survivor who came to London from Bolivia for a better life, to Liam, the son of Fleetwood Mac’s founder who sleeps rough outside Richmond station (links in the comments below to both of those stories, and more). MyLondon senior reporter Luke Donnelly is project lead for 'Rough'. He says: "When travelling for stories across the city our reporters have noticed more begging on trains, more cardboard signs outside supermarkets and more tents on green spaces. "Over the past few months, we’ve spoken to hundreds of people, visiting some of them several times to build up trust. "In this project we’ve not done anything radical by speaking to people on the street. But we hope by bringing photos and unique voices to as wide an audience as possible, this scandal might be recognised for what it is." Today is the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and we are proud to support a campaign by South Yorkshire Police called ‘Know More’. It wants people across the county to understand that abusive messages and posts are a crime, and all of them have a real-life impact on the women and girls who experience it. The campaign has been informed by some of our research, and one of our journalists has bravely shared her story of online abuse to help raise awareness of the particular issues faced by women in journalism and public-facing roles. Some of London's best used arts and sports venues are under threat of closure. It would be easy to think that the capital gets the lionshare of resources - benefitting from major infrastructure spending on projects such as the Elizabeth Line. But local authorities?which provide the day-to-day services for ordinary Londoners face the same urgent challenges as they do elsewhere. That's why I'm really impressed by this new MyLondon campaign spearheaded by editor Deanne Blaylock and senior content editor Dave Comeau. Over recent months, MyLondon has written dozens of stories about theatres, venues, swimming pools and sports clubs which are under threat - either through a shortage of funding or lack of political will. The team are joining the dots as part of a new campaign, asking why long-standing community assets can no longer be sustained, what can be done about it, and what happens if they are lost forever. Really pleased to see this get off the ground - and fingers crossed for what it can achieve. https://lnkd.in/eg6JdHAd
