Re-Imagining Migration transforms educators and the educational ecosystem by leveraging schools, museums, and other educational spaces to promote belonging, knowledge, understanding, and lifelong habits of mind among immigrant and non-immigrant youth so they can thrive in a world of migration and demographic change. These efforts strengthen our diverse communities, counter polarization, xenophobia, and hate, and transform migration from a crisis to an opportunity. We achieve this by re-imagining education as a vehicle for building belonging, which involves: - Developing and disseminating strength-based approaches to education for immigrant-origin youth that prioritizes teacher-student relationships and belonging. - Creating bridging opportunities for young people to learn with and from each other across their differences. - Providing professional learning opportunities and resources for educators to understand the role of migration in community development over time and across the world. We are alarmed to hear from colleagues at Welcoming America about a significant rise in inquiries regarding anti-immigrant bullying and harassment following the recent election. Anti-immigrant harassment in schools (and society) is unacceptable. The U.S. Constitution mandates that all children receive an equal education, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, wealth, or citizenship status. When children are bullied or harassed, it violates their educational rights. Therefore, it is crucial for school staff to respond promptly and effectively to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Recent educator surveys reveal alarming trends: - Approximately?60%?of educational institutions report incidents of anti-immigrant bullying. - Many teachers indicate that these occurrences often go unreported or unaddressed, highlighting a significant gap in the reporting process. Additionally, research suggests that bystanders are less likely to intervene in cases of anti-immigrant bullying compared to other forms of bullying. This lack of intervention perpetuates a culture of silence and fear, making it imperative to understand the dynamics at play and develop effective strategies to combat this pervasive issue. We strongly recommend that schools clearly communicate to students and the community that anti-immigrant bullying will not be tolerated. We have linked to a free resource with suggestions for responding to anti-immigrant taunts and bullying in schools. Please share it widely: https://lnkd.in/gSirgtPM How can we work together to ensure every student feels safe and supported? Share your thoughts below.

The election reveals that we remain a deeply divided nation in a deeply divided world. The political cycle, marred by stereotypes, disinformation, and misinformation about immigrants and their impact on our communities, has left many of you feeling deeply concerned for yourselves, your students and the young people in your lives. What can educators do to support each other and their students? Here are a few ideas. Build Trusting Relationships with Your Students: Taking the time to get to know your students personally is vital. Learning their names, understanding their backgrounds, and encouraging the sharing of migration stories can create a safe and supportive environment. Self-reflection on biases and assumptions about immigrant youth and their families is also crucial. Ensure Safety and Inclusion: In this charged atmosphere, it is essential to investigate and reinforce school policies that clearly state that anti-immigrant bullying is unacceptable. Addressing all instances of taunting, teasing, or bullying directly is imperative. Creating inclusive climates and implementing supportive policies are vital components of a welcoming environment for all students. Make Diversity Visible: Representation is critical, especially when students feel marginalized. It is important to ensure that diverse languages, identities, and cultures are honored and reflected in hallways, public spaces, and curricula. This recognition affirms students' identities and fosters a sense of pride and belonging. Explore Migration Across the Curriculum: Analyzing migration's impact on local communities and tracing historical patterns of cultural diversity can help students appreciate the significance of migration and foster empathy and understanding. Provide Support Without Stigma: Offering language support, social-emotional resources, and ensuring accessibility of services are crucial for the success of many students. Work to strengthen collaboration between support staff and classroom teachers to create communities of care. Enhance Family and Community Engagement: Given the increasing anti-immigrant rhetoric, immigrant families may feel hesitant to engage with school staff. Building trust and supporting parents in navigating the school system can enhance community involvement and improve students' educational experiences. Providing resources and creating welcoming spaces for families can make a significant difference. Re-Imagining Migration remains steadfast in our conviction that building belonging for young people and promoting an understanding of migration as central to the story of our world, is necessary for long-term change. We are proud to stand with educators who are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of their students. Recognizing that many of you are feeling vulnerable, Re-Imagining Migration is here to help. Please reach out with suggestions for how we can partner to maximize impact. None of us are in this alone.

Our friends at Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation invite us to think about the power of words on #IndigenousPeoplesDay.
On this #IndiginousPeoplesDay, we encourage everyone to stop using the phrases “The US is a nation of immigrants” & “Native people used to inhabit this land.” Both of these statements erase the histories and current day experiences of Indigenous people. While immigrants have made and continue to make important contributions to the US, let's not use language that obscures the histories and hardships of the Indigenous people who were already here. While we hope to create communities where all feel welcomed, we can not do so at the expense of erasing the tremendous loss of life, land, and culture due to colonization. “Used to inhabit this land” implies that Native people only exist in the past. It ignores the fact that they are very much still part of our communities. Being more considerate of our vocabulary is just one small but important step you can take today. Perhaps also look into the Indigenous groups in your area, frequent a business of theirs, or look to further educate yourself and your family.

Bigotry, misunderstanding, and misinformation take a toll on all of us, particularly young people. Our partners at iThrive Games remind us that attending to SEL can help.
The work of adolescence is social and emotional. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, we amplify the importance of teen #mentalhealth and the protective power of #socialemotionallearning (SEL). SEL equips teens with the tools to navigate challenges, build resilience, and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
