Belonging Begins in Schools

关于我们

Re-Imagining Migration transforms educators and the educational ecosystem by leveraging schools, museums, and other educational spaces to promote belonging, knowledge, understanding, and lifelong habits of mind among immigrant and non-immigrant youth so they can thrive in a world of migration and demographic change. These efforts strengthen our diverse communities, counter polarization, xenophobia, and hate, and transform migration from a crisis to an opportunity. We achieve this by re-imagining education as a vehicle for building belonging, which involves: - Developing and disseminating strength-based approaches to education for immigrant-origin youth that prioritizes teacher-student relationships and belonging. - Creating bridging opportunities for young people to learn with and from each other across their differences. - Providing professional learning opportunities and resources for educators to understand the role of migration in community development over time and across the world. • Earlier this Month, Executive Director Adam Strom delivered a powerful presentation at Worcester State University, challenging persistent myths surrounding immigration that divide communities and harm immigrant-origin youth. In a time when responses to migration are fueling polarization among the most diverse generation in our nation's history, Adam's talk emphasized how education can build a shared sense of belonging. He highlighted Re-Imagining Migration's approach to preparing students to distinguish between multiple perspectives, myths, manipulation, and misinformation about migration. Key takeaways from the presentation: -Migration is a shared human experience that connects our past, present, and future -Educational institutions play a crucial role in fostering inclusion and dismantling harmful stereotypes -Students need support in their social, emotional development and civic participation, especially during times of heightened immigration enforcement This event comes at a critical moment when many immigrant families are experiencing increased anxiety. School districts across Massachusetts are working to reassure families that schools remain safe spaces for all students regardless of immigration status. As an organization, we remain committed to decreasing bias and hatred against young people of diverse origins, and helping rising generations build and sustain welcoming and inclusive communities. How is your organization working to support immigrant-origin youth and create more inclusive communities? • We're spending the next two days conducting final interviews for our Education Leaders Fellowship program—a cornerstone of our strategy to transform educational ecosystems where all students can thrive. In today's hyper-partisan climate, where programs supporting immigrant youth often face significant pushback, we believe local bridge builders who understand their communities are essential to creating lasting change. These leaders can effectively adapt best practices to their unique local contexts, and we're honored to support and elevate their important work. Our Education Leaders Fellowship focuses on building crucial relationships across school districts, educators, community organizations, and stakeholders to foster belonging in schools and communities. Fellows will develop comprehensive community plans in collaboration with our team while working alongside fundraisers to secure resources for implementation. We're looking for visionaries who can conduct needs assessments, map community assets, identify strategic partnerships, and serve as regional ambassadors for inclusive education. As part of the work, they'll document their journey so others can replicate and scale their success. We can't wait to meet these inspiring changemakers who will help build more inclusive educational environments for all students! Want to support this vital work? Here's how you can get involved: -Connect us with potential school district partners in your region -Share funding opportunities or introduce us to potential donors -Volunteer your expertise to support our fellows -Amplify our fellows' stories when we share them -Follow our page to stay informed about our progress Together, we can create educational environments where all students, regardless of their migration story, can thrive. • Re-Imagining Migration is proud to share "Belonging Beyond Borders," a new community-led initiative to combat anti-immigrant bullying in schools. Recent data shows approximately 60% of school administrators report incidents of anti-immigrant bullying, yet most cases go unreported and unaddressed. The tragic death of 11-year-old Jocelynn Rojo Carranza this February highlighted the devastating consequences such bullying can have, but thousands more cases remain invisible to the public eye. "Belonging Beyond Borders" offers a straightforward approach through three simple actions we encourage everyone in our network to take: 1. Take the pledge to commit to concrete actions that address anti-immigrant bullying in your sphere of influence. 2. Share the pledge with your colleagues, networks, and communities to amplify its impact. 3. Contribute to the effort by implementing the actions you've pledged—whether that's improving reporting mechanisms in your school, creating more inclusive curricula, training staff on intervention strategies, or fostering dialogue in your community. This isn't about joining an organization or attending meetings—it's about each of us identifying what we can do in our own roles to make a difference for vulnerable students. As an organization focused on helping schools navigate demographic change effectively, Re-Imagining Migration sees initiatives like this as crucial for creating environments where immigrant-origin youth can thrive. We invite you to join this important community effort.
