When temperatures decrease, cold air can get trapped near the ground under a layer of warmer air, creating a "temperature inversion." This traps pollutants close to the surface, increasing pollution levels. Moreover, more fossil fuels are burned to heat homes and buildings, leading to higher emissions of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and other pollutants. This month marks the beginning of the final year of the Re-Breath experimental project. Since August 2022 the project is conducting two demonstrative actions by using a fleet of ten buses in two European Cities, #Bergamo and #Bratislava, that are in two of the regions where the EEA (European Economic Area) states that there is the highest concentrations of PM.? Thanks to Brembo, world leader in the development and production of braking systems, together with CNR - ISMN, Istituto sull'Inquinamento Atmosferico - CNR, Arriva Italia and ARRIVA Slovakia, Re-Breath project is facing the challenge to improve knowledge of the emissions of non-exhausted microparticles generated by the braking systems of the local public transport (LPT) system; assess their impact on people's quality of life and the environment; and finally design and develop an innovative and more environmentally friendly bus braking system and intervene with green mitigation works.
