A lot of climate conversations are about switching from a fossil fuel based technology to a similar piece of technology but powered by renewables or batteries, with the underlying system unchanged. This is a huge shame, as we are not addressing the root cause of the crises: the fact that we are living as if we have many planet Earths. What we really need to be doing is less: less driving, less flying, eating less red meat and dairy, consuming less in general. That will allow us to reduce our material footprint and protect as much nature as possible. We should not be asking “how can we maintain our lifestyles?” but rather “what do we need to do to protect the planet?”. Which is not to say that we will be worse off under an economy that uses fewer resources, but it does change the solutions we seek.
