PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: The City of Tolleson, Arizona embraces the belief that vibrant cities require modern, safe and welcoming facilities that support a broad range of community services and needs. Committed to further improving the quality of life for current and future residents, the city invested in a new civic center that celebrates the town’s caring community, rich history and promotes collaboration, transparency, equity, inclusion and inspiration.
Fiscal responsibility, longevity, flexibility and community engagement were key considerations that helped guide all aspects of this resilient, ADA accessible, multi-purpose facility.
This 47,900-square-foot complex (designed by SmithGroup) is a community destination featuring administrative offices; a flexible, multi-use council chamber and adjacent courtyard for indoor and outdoor public and private events; and a public library with a bookstore, public computers and meeting rooms, and a variety of age-appropriate spaces programmed for the varying needs of children, teens and adults. The facility also includes a new senior center and multi-purpose room that accommodates a range of daily activities and larger events such as luncheons, presentations, fiestas and more. This flex room opens onto a new public patio and greenspaces that further extend the functionality of the space.
Unique to this facility, the Tolleson Civic Center also serves as the community’s repository for the historic events and memories depicted in the statues, plaques, landscaping, pathways and ever-changing murals proudly created by local artists.
