Gopher tortoises do more than just dig—they create homes for over 300 other forest creatures! As a keystone species, their burrows provide vital shelter, making them essential to the ecosystem. At Rayonier, we take our responsibility to protect these important species seriously. Our foresters carefully plan planting and harvesting operations to ensure their safety and continued presence in our forests. Protecting biodiversity is a key part of sustainable forestry. In the steep terrain of our Pacific Northwest forests, tower logging is a game changer. This technique uses a cable system to hoist logs high into the air, safely moving them to flatter ground. Not only does this method improve safety for loggers working on rugged slopes, but it also helps prevent erosion and keeps sediment out of nearby waterways—supporting both sustainable forestry and healthy ecosystems. It also leaves the forest ready for replanting, which typically takes place within 1-2 years of the harvest. Learn more about how tower logging works: https://hubs.ly/Q036BZ2p0
