Sustainability Networking Night! Thursday, November 14, 5 - 7 p.m. at Creature Comforts! Join the Office of Sustainability for a casual evening of networking and merrymaking with sustainability students, professionals, and enthusiasts in the Athens area. All are welcome! Shortly after recovery efforts began in North Carolina following #HurricaneHelene, Camp Miller in Pensacola was transformed into an aid station for people to come and pick up hot meals, shower, and receive other essential needs. When this hub was first established, they were using gas generators to keep everything running. Once we arrived at Camp Miller after Helene, we set up solar panels, solar microgrids, and a solar trailer to accommodate their power needs. During a recent visit to check on the site and make sure that everything was running properly, not only did we find a vibrant community of people working together and helping one another, but they also haven’t had to use any gas generators to keep food and insulin cool in refrigerators or to keep their showers running. Our dedication to doing this work will continue for as long as there are people and communities who can benefit from using solar throughout this recovery process. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Brian, who is currently managing the Camp Miller site and has worked with us to make sure that people’s needs are met.
