The first of seven playspaces is now open with the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD)! Each playspace draws on research and local input and reflects its branch neighborhood's unique cultural and natural identity. Children can connect with their community through activities highlighting Santa Clara’s distinctive features. Areas for active, movement-based play complement quieter, contemplative zones, all built to foster a sense of wonder and connection. It has been such a difficult few months as we watch history being challenged and erased. It’s hard not to feel somewhat hopeless. Yet, I keep doing what I can by contacting representatives and advocating for a better tomorrow—for future generations. Participating in the creation of the In Slavery's Wake traveling exhibition during a time of widespread misinformation demonstrates our power as museum designers, developers, and builders. We have a voice—a means of interpretation and collective action to educate and inform a hopeful future. History is a powerful tool; if we preserve it through storytelling and the development of authentic experiences, we can continue to uphold our values and make meaningful progress and change. We are honored to have been the fabricator for In Slavery's Wake: Making Black Freedom in the World, a traveling exhibit by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Over 1,200 individual pieces of scenery and 6,400 pieces of hardware were designed for seamless packing and assembly across several language barriers to share how Black communities throughout the world navigate the histories and legacies of slavery and colonialism. This exhibit will be on view in Washington, D.C. through June 8th before heading to Brazil, South Africa, Senegal, Belgium, and England.
