Inspired by the belief that every child deserves an equal opportunity to learn, nearly 200 Ravenswood Classroom Partners volunteers work with Ravenswood City School District teachers to support the success of students in East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park. In this school district, 60% of the students are English learners, about 90% are low income, over 80% are below grade level and reading and math, and over 40% are in unstable housing or considered homeless. Ravenswood Classroom Partners supports students facing these challenges. Our dedicated, trained volunteers are a consistent, caring presence in the lives of these children, working weekly in the same classroom with the same students throughout the school year. Ravenswood teachers rely on RCP volunteers to help improve the academic performance and social-emotional well-being of the students. RCP is a key component of the district’s literacy intervention strategy and supports grades Transitional Kindergarten through 5th.

High-Dosage Tutoring During the School Day Boosts Attendance RCP's mission is to provide tutoring and mentoring to Ravenswood students. High-dosage tutoring during the school day, similar to what our volunteers provide, has been shown to improve attendance among students, which in turn improves learning outcomes. This article tells about the success of high-dosage tutoring in Washington, D.C. schools. Students who receive the tutoring feel supported and more eager to learn; and their absenteeism rates drop. RCP's redesigned program for literacy tutoring supports students learning to read using the Ravenswood district's new science-based and phonics-focused curriculum. Volunteers work side by side with teachers during a class period dedicated to individualized instruction and tutoring. The new program has had measurable impact on boosting students' reading levels in other districts, and our Belle Haven pilot last year showed great results!
