We often think of diplomacy as a game of power and strategy. But what if the real secret to successful negotiations is understanding people? I had the honor of teaching negotiations to the Attachés at the German Foreign Ministry at Villa Borsig, together with my dearest friend and mentor Mark Young and Jake Darbandi on behalf of Rational Games Inc. The next generation of diplomats is ready to take on the world’s toughest conversations. Excited to see where they go next! #Negotiation #Diplomacy #ForeignAffairs #Rationalgames #future

  • ???????? ???????? ???????? ?? ?????????????????????? ?????? ???????????? ???????? ?????? ??????????? We all have—and it all comes down to the ??????????-?????????????????????????? ??????????????. Every experienced negotiator knows how crucial trust is. When it’s strong, agreements come naturally. But why is it so difficult to build? Because trust and communication are trapped in a ?????????????? ??????????—distrust leads to miscommunication, and miscommunication fuels even more distrust. Imagine two parties genuinely aiming for a win-win outcome. That alone isn’t enough. A tiny hesitation, a defensive word, or a moment of opacity—often stemming from distrust—can lead to misinterpretation. This fuels even more distrust, which leads to even poorer communication. So, ?????????? ?????????? ??????????: ???????????????????????????????? ???? ????????????????? They recognize the value of trust-building, and they can spot intelligence in other people. ? ?????????? ?????????????????? ?????? ???????????????????????? and disrupts defensive behavior. ? ?????????? ?????????????? ??????????????????????????—without inviting exploitation, fostering trust on the other hand. Next time you sense distrust creeping in, try ?? ?????????? ???????????? ?????????????? ???? ????????-?????????????????????? ?????????? to shift the dynamic from distrust to empathy. ?? ??????????????: If your counterpart seems overly skeptical: 1?? Acknowledge and normalize the tension: "It sounds like trust is not here yet. I wouldn’t expect anyone smart to trust me very soon, and that’s OK” 2?? Add the magic touch of irony: “If anything, we have something in common. You can trust me on the fact that I also didn’t trust you at first. And maybe there is a way to change that, I want to hear what you think” ?? ????????????: ???????? ???????? ????????????????. Irony isn’t universal. Media & EU Policy Comms Professional w/ Business Development Experience | Senior B2B Advisor @Euractiv | Alumna @Belgium's 40 under 40 | Board Member @Restless Brussels

???????? ?????? ???????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????????? ???????????????? ???????? ??????????? A big part of my job is talking to PA and policy comms professionals from associations, corporates and consultancies, supporting their visibility activities through various tools and channels. (Full transparency: Euractiv’s media solutions are usually at the top of that list! ?? ) But these conversations aren’t just about visibility tools. I also try to challenge them—to rethink how they run their operations, lead their teams, and approach communications. In essence, I aim to help them innovate. That’s why I love staying up-to-date with trends in comms, journalism, as well as new ways of learning. Lately, gamified methods have been so helpful with my learning journey starting from my Duolingo obsession. ?? Although I’ve been familiar with games—especially video games—since childhood (and even shared part of my life with a professional game designer), I’ve never been an avid player myself. Probably my overly competitive side played a role—losing wasn’t something I could easily handle in the past. (Don’t judge me, things are different now ??) Still, I’ve developed a real appreciation for gamified tools that challenge thinking and boost creativity, and I’m way more eager to integrate them into my professional life. Last year, I had the opportunity to take part in a workshop organised by Mark Young and Philippe Gruca in Athens—thanks to Stiftung Mercator GmbH's Turkiye Europe Future Forum—and got a glimpse of how games can transform the way we negotiate. You can check Rational Games Inc for more. And earlier this week, I was delighted to have been invited to participate in a workshop co-organised by ESAE - European Society of Association Executives and the Wonderful Copenhagen. Via the LEGO? Serious Play? facilitation methodology, we played all afternoon with LEGO pieces and thought about how associations can redesign their partnerships with destinations. But the challenges we tackled during the workshop went beyond that—we touched upon every corner of association management: from rethinking business models to improving internal communication, building trust at all levels, and enhancing the capacity of cities hosting large events. Not only did I learn so much about the dynamics between associations and destinations, but I also challenged myself to think differently. I was fascinated by the creative models my workshop mates including Bettina Reventlow-Mourier, Elysia Blake, Fanny Senez, and Ioannis Pallas came up with during the sessions. A special thank you to ESAE and Association By Design for the invitation and our facilitators, Robert Rasmussen, Stylianos Filopoulos and Dominik Rinnhofer , for guiding us through the journey! If you’re curious about this experience, I can’t recommend it enough. And if you’d like to hear more about what else I took away from the workshop, you know where to find me. ??

The most established model in personality psychology today is the "Big 5" ??, also known as the "OCEAN model". Its acronym refers to the 5 personality traits present in everyone to varying degrees??. Let's see how they are relevant to the negotiator ?? 1?? Those with an important Openness to experience, and who are therefore naturally creative ??, will find it easier to come up with ideas to "make the pie bigger" – a prerequisite for win-win agreements. ?? They run the risk of spreading themselves too thinly and losing sight of the objectives they set themselves in advance! 2?? The person with a high level of Conscientiousness, who has an affinity with organization and attention to detail ??, will of course be the one with the most solid preparation. Data, statistics, information, arguments: you'll have it all. ?? His weak point will be his difficulty in integrating novelty, especially during the negotiation phase. 3?? If your Extraversion is particularly marked, and social interaction therefore gives you more energy than it takes ??, you'll find it rather easy to communicate and assert your interests. You’ll know how to direct the small talk for a while, before tackling the big one. ?? There's also a danger in this ease of reaching out: neglecting to bring the other person to you. 4?? Those with high Agreeableness also have specific strengths and weaknesses. In fact, they are highly empathetic ?? and will readily take an interest in the needs of their negotiating partner, and dive deep into the iceberg of his interests. ?? This is also the most dangerous personality trait in a negotiation, if the negotiating partner has a much lower level of empathy. 5?? Finally, a person with a high level of Neuroticism, i.e. a heightened sensitivity to negative emotions ??, will be a vigilant negotiator. He'll find it easier to escape the traps set for him, given his natural ability to magnify risks. ?? Of course, stress and its physical manifestations can make negotiation very difficult. ?? The tools we have developed with Rational Games ?? address the specific needs associated with each of these 5 traits. Find out more in the comments section! ??

?? Negotiation as a Dance: Choreography, Adaptation, and Connection Imagine stepping onto the dance floor, prepared with your choreography, only to realize your partner has their own moves in mind. You adjust, you flow, and together you create something even better than planned. Sound familiar? That’s what great negotiation feels like. At Rational Games Inc., we see negotiation as a dance—a blend of structure and spontaneity, substance and process. It’s about knowing when to follow the rules and when to improvise, all while staying attuned to your partner. Key questions we explore: - How can negotiation choreography create safety and trust? - Why does “active sensing” matter in high-pressure scenarios? - What’s the secret to balancing structure with creative expression? ?? Learn more in our latest article: “Negotiating an Agreement Without Losing the Flow” by Lisa Laiblin, Johannes Hofmann, and Janne Sven Krippl. ?? • ???? We were thrilled to be in Girona again to teach the postdoctoral junior leaders how to negotiate playfully! Thank you Fundación ”la Caixa” and SIRIS Academic for being a part of your program! In academia methodology and precise planning are inalienable. Additionally the ability of being flexible and spontaneous creates a space for the “negotiating dance”.? ??How to be more aware while negotiating? ??How to lead the negotiation more strategically? ??How to create the moment of readiness? And what is BATNA anyway? Our 43 participants were occupied with these and other questions while stepping into the unknown: understand the interests of the others, create value and unlock the power of play to better deal with conflict in general. What is negotiation for our students? - Listening? - Collaboration - Dialogue - Opportunity - Ability to move further Surprised? Yes, we at Rational Games Inc believe in the power of connectedness, not in dirty tricks.
