Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting a Fast Class featuring Dr. Gaila Sims, Vice President of Programs and Interpretation, who provided an exclusive preview of Living Legacies: African American History in the Fredericksburg Area. This highly anticipated exhibition will open on May 30, 2025, at the Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) and represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to document and honor the contributions of the African American community in Fredericksburg. Through extensive community engagement, Living Legacies will showcase pivotal moments, personal narratives, and historical artifacts that have shaped the region. Under Dr. Sims’ leadership, FAM has launched impactful initiatives such as walking tours, lectures, and educational programs that highlight the depth and significance of African American heritage. We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Sims for her invaluable work and the valuable insights she shared with our team. We also thank our senior leader, Marcus Carter, Sr., for facilitating the conversation, as well as Jason Ford and Daphney Smith-Barrett from our mission services team for sharing their reflections on the importance of this month in recognizing and celebrating Black culture.
