BrainFutures and University of California, Berkeley's Collaborative for the Economics of Psychedelics (CEP) are proud to announce the release of our groundbreaking whitepaper: "Scaling Psychedelic Therapies in the Health System." Our survey of mental health #providers across 15 states reveals significant interest in adopting psychedelic therapies alongside challenges.?To tackle some of these challenges, we are #convening providers from across the country on April 1st, 2025 (link to register in the comments). Key Findings Include: ?? Strong Interest in Psychedelic Therapy Expansion: Two-thirds plan to expand psychedelic therapy services, and half expect to offer new psychedelic treatments within six months of FDA approval. ?? Cash-Pay Dominance: Most providers rely on cash-pay models for psychedelic therapy, with little expectation of insurance coverage. This raises concerns about #access and equity, given the expected high out-of-pocket costs of psychedelic therapy. ?? Mission-Driven, Not Profit-Driven: Providers cite a commitment to #patient care as the primary motivator for offering psychedelic therapies rather than financial incentives. • Key Concept: “Windows of Opportunity” At the RAMHT Summit Chris Aiken, MD recently shared a powerful insight about the importance of timely intervention in mental health care—what he calls the "windows of opportunity." These are critical moments when acting quickly can dramatically improve outcomes for patients. Take bipolar disorder, for example: it often goes undiagnosed for years, leading to dramatically worsening symptoms over time. Innovations like the 2-minute Rapid Mood Screen (RMS)—as accurate as the traditional 30-minute version—enable clinicians to identify and treat these conditions much faster. To Chris, this creates opportunities for earlier interventions, such as prescribing Lithium, which can lead to significantly better long-term outcomes. The same principle applies to conditions like postpartum depression, where rapid-acting treatments aren’t just vital for the patient but every day counts for the developing newborn. By seizing these “windows of opportunity,” we can intervene early and profoundly change lives. Learn more about the Rapid Mood Screen here: chrisaikenmd.com/rmsii Owen M. • Can AI Assessments Speed Things Up (Accurately)? Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is a condition—often a side effect of certain medications—that leads to involuntary, repetitive movements, like unplanned lip-smacking or tongue-thrusting. For patients and clinicians alike, it’s no small frustration. Here’s the challenge: the current gold-standard assessment, AIMS, takes 15-45 minutes—far too long for most clinics. Enter Videra Health: an AI-powered, video-based assessment that patients can complete in under five minutes, on their own schedule. It’s automated, generates a risk score, and flags TD as low, moderate, or high risk—all without a live provider. Efficient care, delivered. ?? Meet Dr. Carlene Macmillan, a RAMHT Summit speaker and an unsung hero of…well, CPT code committees. ??? You know those behind-the-scenes wizards who turn groundbreaking ideas into treatments we can actually use? That’s Carlene. She’s been doing the hard (and unpaid) work to get new CPT codes so cutting-edge treatments are accessible and covered by insurance.?? Committees may not sound glamorous, but they’re essential to transforming ideas into real-world solutions. Every breakthrough treatment we see today likely started with a small group willing to dig into the details, build consensus, and make it happen. • Rapid Acting Treatment = Better Compliance The longer a therapeutic takes to work, the lower the compliance rate becomes. A huge amount of resources are wasted because patients lose trust and abandon treatments that don’t show quick results. By investing in rapid-acting technologies, we can boost compliance, deliver faster results, and truly maximize the money being spent on mental health care. – Matthew D. Tucker, CEO, Nightware, RAMHT Summit SF 2024 @Matthew Tucker Nightware is an FDA-designated breakthrough device that works immediately to treat frequent, traumatic nightmares, enabling restful sleep. ??
