Rapid Forensic Cell Typing technology is a new scientific method to identify the biological contents of forensic samples. This technology can accelerate evidence processing by indicating which samples will yield the best DNA profiling results, allowing crime labs to analyze more samples within budget. Our high throughput and non-destructive process captures data on individual cells in evidence samples using imaging flow cytometry that can be seamlessly integrated into the typical forensic lab’s workflow. RFCT’s process can identify the types of cells in a sample and their quantities, where the cells originated from on the human body, and the time elapsed between sample deposition and sample collection, adding crucial context to DNA evidence. By focusing on the most promising samples, we eliminate human judgment and biases when gathering and processing evidence, creating a more equitable criminal justice system and empowering law enforcement, military, and intelligence communities to make actionable decisions.

Welcome to RFCT’s first #ForensicFriday post! Did you know that what you touch during the day can affect the autofluorescence of epidermal cells from your hand? In our studies of autofluorescent signatures to differentiate cells among individuals, an unusually strong signature in the red channel (650nm-670nm) was detected for one individual with a particular breakfast. This observation led to further experiments comparing contact and non-contact with this and other substances/items in other individuals. The signatures persisted for hours, even after handwashing! We are happy to announce a recent grant awarded to our CTO Christopher Ehrhardt from the THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. The award will allow Dr. Ehrhardt's lab “to develop a forensic test that can determine the length of time since animal body fluid, such as blood or saliva, was deposited at a crime scene.” Using an imaging flow cytometer, Ehrhardt and his students in the VCU Department of Forensic Science will measure cellular autofluorescence of animal fluids.
