Every Thanksgiving at Ranken Jordan, we are reminded of a somber reality: not everyone gets to be home with their loved ones for the holidays. Our hospitalized patients and frontline workers know that fact all too well. Thankfully, this hospital has always been one that challenges norms and makes the best of every situation. ? On Thanksgiving, our cook, Tony, and the other amazing individuals on our dietary team lead an opportunity for patients, families, and staff to have a sit-down meal together on the holiday. The planning of such an event requires the joint effort of patient experience, dietitians, maintenance, and nursing. From the tables provided by facilities, to the turkey center pieces handmade by Cindy the receptionist, Tony explains that it’s a collaborative teamwork effort because “everybody having a stake in it makes it a better thing.” ? In previous years, families were provided a grab-and-go style meal. Now, Tony emphasizes the community element. The large dinning-hall style tables ensure that even if a child’s caregivers are unable to be present, they can feel time together by connecting with the larger community. “What kid wants to eat alone? And who wants to be in a hospital away from their families to begin with?” Tony responds when asked why that change matters to him. ? “It takes all of us to this. I want to be the person that brings us all together, even if it’s just for a short amount of time.”?-Tony ? This Thanksgiving, we express #gratitude for all the members of the #healthcare #community who regularly step up to go the extra mile for patients on the #holidays. We are especially thankful to Tony and all the members of our staff who selflessly and generously care for the #children of Ranken Jordan. We cannot imagine a better example of the spirit of #Thanksgiving !
