Arjun Yadav has been doing an incredible job bringing organization, safety and efficiency to our machine centers by executing +5S Kaizen events. Continuous improvement is a code we live by.
Within my first 90 days at Rand-Whitney we executed three +5S Kaizen Events. It’s been four months since, and we’ve only misplaced one or two items—quickly replaced and back on track. The +5S Implementation: + SAFETY AND ERGONOMICS Ensure easy access to PPE, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc. A safe environment is critical for successful implementation. 1S: SORT Remove unnecessary items from workspaces. 2S: SET IN ORDER Label items clearly and use shadows for tools. Ensure tools are within arm's reach of operators. 3S: SHINE Clean the entire workspace under machines, conveyors, etc. 4S: STANDARDIZE Create an audit form to measure whether the area is above or below standard. This is where consistency becomes key. 5S: SUSTAIN Sustaining the +5S state is the most important step and it takes time. It means ongoing audits and weekly check-ins with supervisors. Remember that mistakes will happen, but it’s crucial that a team quickly adjusts.
