关于我们

? Land management practices are changing. The traditional ways of managing a ranch, while still effective and widely used, do not work for everyone. As technology becomes more affordable and adoption of new devices and methods becomes more widespread, RanchSense is bridging the gap between the old and the new to allow landowners to more effectively manage their properties while reducing expenses, exposure to the elements, hours in the field and potential human errors and accidents.

Rotational Grazing: Then & Now For generations, ranchers have understood the importance of letting the land rest, a practice that has stood the test of time. Rotational grazing, once done through instinct and experience, is now enhanced with science and technology, ensuring healthier pastures, better livestock, and a more sustainable future. Early ranchers moved cattle across vast open ranges, allowing grasslands to recover naturally before returning. They relied on cowboy knowledge, weather patterns, and good stewardship to keep the land productive. Today’s ranchers use fencing strategies, satellite mapping, and soil health monitoring to rotate livestock efficiently. Many ranchers use regenerative grazing techniques, improving water retention, biodiversity, and forage quality. Though the tools have changed, the goal remains the same, to work with the land, not against it. The wisdom of the past and the innovation of today continue to shape the future of ranching. Generations of ranchers have adapted to changing landscapes, using time-honored traditions alongside new technologies to ensure a sustainable future for agriculture. 6th generation rancher at the R.A. Brown Ranch. Raising great cattle and sharing the truth about the American Rancher

I love creating videos that remind me of friends or others I know. I believe that is a part of my success I’ve been having on social media. These videos don’t sell my products, but they do get me out of my “echo chamber” and in front of new customers. Which one are you?

Built in 1928-1929, the Canon Ranch Sheep Hospital played a crucial role in treating sheep and goats affected by blowfly infestations, which led to the dreaded screw-worm disease. Until 1955, ranchers used this facility to care for infected animals, providing treatment for wounds caused by castration and other medical issues. By isolating sick livestock, they could ensure better care and recovery. After treatment, animals were released into a separate pen west of the building. Today, this historic structure stands as a testament to the resilience of ranchers and the advancements in livestock health. The hospital also helps tell the story of screw-worm eradication, a major breakthrough in animal agriculture. Originally from the Canon Ranch between Ozona and Fort Stockton, this building was donated by George Canon to help educate future generations about the sheep ranching and heritage. Visit the National Ranching Heritage Center to step back in time and learn about the innovations that shaped the livestock industry. Plan your visit at ranchingheritage.org. ??? Last week's cold caused some of our customer's water troughs to fail. Thanks to RanchSense Remote Water Monitors, they were alerted right away and were able to get water to their livestock immediately. Without RanchSense, their livestock would have battled the weather without water, a recipe for disaster. Mother Nature may be undefeated but RanchSense won this round! The terms carrying capacity (CC) and stocking rate (SR) get interchangeably used by many in the ranching community. However, they are not the same and have very different meanings and uses. Understanding and using these two terms correctly is essential for proper forage management on the ranch. Carrying capacity is the stocking rate that is sustainable over time for a given area of land, usually on the pasture or ranch level. Carrying capacity can be expressed as Animal Unit (AU, 1000 lbs. cow with calf), Animal Unit Day (AUD, 26 lbs. of dry forage), Animal Unit Month (AUM, 780 lbs. of dry forage), or Animal Unit Year (AUY, 9360 lbs. of dry forage). Animals are not the same size so it is important to perform calculations on an equivalent basis so adjustment formulas have been created to create an Animal Unit Equivalent (AUE): - For animals that are 1000 lbs., AUE = 1.0 - For animals other weight animals, use: AUE = body weight ÷ 1,000 Stocking rate is expressed as the number of animal units per unit of land area. - Example: a rancher has 60 hd of 1,000 lbs. cows on 500 acres for 12 months. - SR = # acres ÷ [(#AUE) x (duration)] - SR= 500 ÷ [(60) x (12)] - SR = 0.69 acres per animal unit month (AUM) or 8.3 acres per animal unit year (AUY) It is recommended to set the stocking rate at a number that is less than the carrying capacity for the ranch in order to have forage “in the bank” for drought years. Stocking at seventy-five percent of carrying capacity will allow the producer to manage through most drought years without having to make drastic culling decisions. In years of excess forage, the additional forage can be either utilized by transient cattle such as stocker calves or cows, leased to a neighbor, hayed, or allow the pasture to go to seed which will allow for a more resilient plant in subsequent years. Several U.S. presidents have left their mark on the ranching industry, either through personal experience or influential policies. ???????????? ????????????????????, the first president, was a farmer with a keen interest in agricultural innovation at his Mount Vernon estate. While not known as a rancher, he raised livestock and experimented with farming techniques that were influential in shaping early American agriculture. ???????????? ??????????????, another key figure, was a successful farmer and landowner in Tennessee. He raised cattle and grew crops on his plantation, The Hermitage. His involvement in the agricultural industry helped shape his policies on land distribution. ???????????????? ?????????????????? is arguably the most iconic president associated with ranching. After the death of his first wife, he moved to the Badlands of North Dakota, where he became a cattle rancher. His time spent there not only shaped his views on conservation but also his advocacy for the American West, leading to the establishment of national parks and wildlife refuges. Roosevelt’s love for the land and ranching helped solidify him as a symbol of the rugged frontier spirit. ???????????? ??. ??????????????, the 36th president of the United States, also had strong ties to ranching, particularly through his family's land in the Texas Hill Country. Johnson inherited the LBJ Ranch, located near Johnson City, which became a symbol of his connection to rural America. Johnson's ranching experience deeply influenced his understanding of agricultural issues, and he championed farm policies during his presidency. These presidents were not only involved in ranching, but they also influenced the agricultural landscape of the United States through their personal experiences and political actions, impacting land policies and conservation efforts for generations to come.
