WATCH ??: HERD SIZE REPORTS ???? In today's edition of the RANCH REPORT SERIES we’re explaining the Herd Size Reports. ?? ?? ?? These projections for your breeding herds are particularly important because these represent the “factories” that will produce your future calves, lambs and/or kids. ?? In this example ranch, John Smith at Green Pastures Ranch thinks he is at max carrying capacity with a breeding herd of 190 head. He wants to maintain this herd size but sees that under his current plan, his breeding herd numbers will consistently decrease for the next 5 years. ?? John’s Replacement Cost Report in Ranch Vision shows him that he can produce bred replacements for less money than he would spend by purchasing replacements. This means it is much more cost-effective for him to raise his own breeding replacements. ?? In Ranch Vision, he adjusts his inputs for percentage of heifer calves retained for breeding replacements and immediately sees he’ll need to increase that number from 15% to about 35% to maintain his future breeding herd at current levels, based on his Herd Size Report.
