I recently visited the Lisbon aquarium and witnessed the most amazing exhibition of all time about the underwater forest. What a fantastic experience it was!! Through my work with USAID's Feed the Future program in Mozambique, I witnessed both the promise and challenges of agricultural development initiatives. Despite setbacks from cyclones and political conflicts, the experience taught invaluable lessons about working with smallholder farmers. Three critical insights emerged: ?? farmers are diverse and need tailored approaches; ?? they have strong aspirations beyond mere subsistence; and ?? interventions must be economically viable. While exploring Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and carbon credit projects, I found that financial returns often fall short of meaningfully improving livelihoods. However, NbS could serve as an enabler for improved livelihoods rather than a complete solution. Looking at FtF's success with rigorous research and adaptable strategies, we need similar dedication in studying and implementing NbS projects. The goal should be combining environmental objectives with genuine economic empowerment for communities. What are your thoughts on it? ???? For 20 years, Angola has faced an average loss of more than 200 000 hectares of forest each year! This means that Angola loses a forested area equivalent to the size of the city of San Francisco or Luanda every 3 weeks. This alarming rate has direct consequences for the climate, biodiversity, and local communities. ?? At RAMO, we approach deforestation as a important and urgent matter, with direct consequences in terms of intensified climate change, loss of biodiversity, and impact on local communities. That's why we created the Deforestation Risk Tool. ?? What can it do? The tool provides critical geospatial data on past deforestation (2001-2024) and flags regions by deforestation risk (high, medium, low). Developed in alignment with World Bank recommendations, it leverages satellite data and globally tested AI, enhanced with local insights for improved accuracy—from biome assessments to land use and socioeconomic factors. ?? Who is this tool for? Carbon project developers and REDD+ implementers, especially those using VERRA VM48 methodology, will find it useful to understand current and expected deforestation in a region of interest. Plus, companies exporting to the EU can use the tool to proactively understand deforestation risks and mitigate them in their supply chain, in preparation for the upcoming EUDR regulation. ? After 10 years in Mozambique, starting as a Peace Corps volunteer and later founding climate tech ventures, I've learned that true leadership is not what I used to believe. Leadership in conservation isn't about having the fanciest carbon measurement tools or the most sophisticated monitoring systems. It's about people. Always has been.? No B2B or B2C, it was whole about H2H: Human to Human? I remember delivering emergency services after Cyclone Idai hit. While our tech helped track distribution, it was the trust we'd built with local communities that made a real difference. The same trust that later helped us establish Mozambique's first speciality coffee brand and create the country's first Masters in Conservation Biology program in a National Park. The secret? Meeting people where they are. Whether a corporate CEO looking to invest in carbon credits or a local farmer seeking sustainable income, everyone wants prosperity without harming nature. RAMO Earth began while I was in Mozambique. I was working with smallholder farmers, large scale concession holders and everyone in between. They were all asking me about carbon credits. At the time, Mozambique was going through major calamities including conflict, a devastating cyclone and the global pandemic. These vulnerable communities and ecosystems were being repeatedly smashed. Those who were there throughout this time know first hand the devastation. Meanwhile, in the world of climate, Paris had started a boom. There were wild proposals going around about million dollar carbon projects. I was leading a team with Eric Wilburn and we dove into the space headfirst. I was lucky to find great consultation and mentors with people who had been in the space for years like Charlie Langan, Aristides Muhate, Muri Soares, Michael Netzer, Alexa Lord and so many others who were talking about carbon integrity before it was a coined term. All of this before any of the myriad bad press and scandals that have become the norm. After nearly four years of hands on project development, doing carbon calculations for VCUs, working out co-benefit sharing models for ARR and REDD - where I started to understand that the cost > price for real VCUs. Despite this, I was hooked on the proposition that the VCM could boost the lives of people shouldering the burden of keeping forests alive (or bringing them back). I wanted to find a unique way that I could contribute to the fight of stopping deforestation and being part of the global effort to restore wild places. Luckily, I met Miguel Correia who inspired me by his work on AI data analytics and his dream to bring those powerful tools to nature-based solutions. Together, we teamed up to form RAMO earlier this year. Since then, I have been humbled by how much I didn't know in the space, and also by how much the entire climate tech (and nature tech) space is evolving - warp speed. I have also spent countless months in Angola (shout out to Fazenda Girassol Angola; AAMC - Associa??o Angolana Mercado Carbono, Data4Angola and Terracrua Design) working with the government, land stewards and other NGO's to understand the path forward for Angola. Mozambique in contrast has been working on carbon credit readiness since 2013 (before?) and today they have over 30+ projects looking at sub-jurisdictional approaches on the VCM. Many are going to succeed. And with the support of FNDS and other great actors in the space (ACMI, CrossBoundary Group and others) will develop high-quality credits.
