Two years ago, Miguel Correia and I started RAMO Earth with a whiteboard in a living room. Miguel had been developing AI solutions for nature—climate risk, forecasting, generative AI—while I was mapping out the climate challenges I had seen firsthand after a decade working with communities and five years in carbon development. The connection was obvious. The business model? Tricky... The carbon market struggles to meet the basic standards of a functioning commodities market. And yet, for many communities on the ground, it’s one of the few pathways to funding regenerative practices and conservation at scale. Philanthropy is an option, but nature-based carbon projects offer something unique: a way to direct global capital toward rural economies, create jobs that sequester carbon, and generate real economic value. It’s not a radical idea—but in practice, aligning all the necessary vectors is hard. That’s why we’ve stayed grounded by focusing on the real challenges: those of landowners, carbon developers, and offset buyers. That’s what keeps us moving in the right direction. With over 16 years of experience, he delivers science-based solutions to pressing environmental and social challenges, particularly in forestry, carbon sequestration, land-use change, hydrology, climate change, and adaptation strategies. ?? Michael has successfully supported high-integrity carbon projects under the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), guided companies on carbon accounting strategies aligned with Science-Based Targets (SBTi), and conducted due diligence for natural climate solution investments. ?? A recognized geospatial expert, Michael excels in modeling deforestation, forest degradation, hydrology, and climate adaptation assessments. This month, we’re sharing updates from our recent visit to Angola, enhancements to the RAMO platform, and key insights into the Carbon Credits and Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) sector.

I recently made a trip to Angola with Miguel Correia and Matthew McLuckie, a country on the verge of a major push for biodiversity and conservation. ???? Angola has about 15% (target set for 30% by 2030) of its land designated as protected areas and is home to one of the largest Miombo woodlands in the world—sandwiched between dense rainforest to the north and deserts to the south. This unique landscape holds immense potential for conservation and sustainable land use. We are making incredible progress on nature-based solutions initiatives. We want to find and support projects that are scalable and investable. During my trip, I had the chance to reconnect with old partners like Carlos Padre, who is building a tree nursery with a capacity of over half a million seedlings to help regreen Angola. ?? I also met with the team at the Institute of Forest Development, who walked me through their plans to revitalize Angola’s forest sector. Their vision and commitment to sustainable forestry are key to the country’s future. Additionally, I connected with new partners at AAPA (Agriculture Association), who are working in biofuels and large-scale rice production—efforts that could bring significant climate benefits and economic opportunities. Overall, it was an incredible trip, and I’m grateful for every moment I get to spend in Angola. The growing cadre of conservation and biodiversity champions are slowly taking center stage in a country whose economy has long been fueled by fossil energy. Miguel’s journey began in AI and data science, where he worked on global challenges like reducing CO2 emissions, preventing wildfires and optimizing forest management, and improving agricultural resilience. But his mission took a deeper turn when he witnessed the destruction of ancient forests in Australia, the delicate balance between people and nature in the Congo, and the urgent need for tailored conservation solutions in Southeast Asia. These moments solidified his resolve to use technology as a force for nature restoration. Some Highlights from Miguel’s Journey: ? AI for Impact: Developed AI-driven solutions that reduced CO2 emissions and improved land management. ? Wildfire Prevention and Improved Forest Management: Created AI tools to improve management of forests, prevent wildfires, protecting vulnerable ecosystems. ? Global Research & Conservation: Worked on human-wildlife coexistence in Africa and sustainable development in Southeast Asia. ? Tech for Carbon Markets: Leading RAMO’s innovation in AI and geospatial analytics to simplify and scale nature-based solutions. At RAMO, Miguel is pioneering a new vision: By combining AI, geospatial analytics, and generative AI, he is making the carbon market more transparent, restoration projects more effective, and conservation efforts more scalable.
