?? APOE genotyping: A key to personalized risk assessment in Alzheimer's therapy! ?? What is APOE genotyping? APOE genotyping is the determination of the individual combination of the APOE alleles of which there are the following six: ?2/?2, ?2/?3, ?2/?4, ?3/?3, ?3/?4 und ?4/?4 ?? Why is this important? New disease-modifying therapies such as lecanemab can slow down early-stage Alzheimer's. However Alzheimer’s patients carrying two copies of the APOE ε4 allele have an increased risk of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) from therapy with such anti-amyloid antibody drugs. Thus, APOE genotyping helps to assess the risk of side effects from these Alzheimer's therapies. Genetic testing enables better decision-making and individualized treatment planning. ?? How does the test work? The genetic variants of the APOE gene ε2, ε3 and ε4 can be determined quickly from a blood sample using a PCR-based test. This enables more personalized treatment approaches. ?? Conclusion: APOE genotyping offers patients safety and helps neurologists to choose the optimal therapy.
