We are pleased to share that Rakuten Mobile has expanded its 5G (Sub6) coverage in the Kanto region, including the Greater Tokyo Area, by 110% this year, surpassing our initial 60% target for 2024. Similar measures to expand 5G coverage have been made in the Nagoya and Osaka regions, and starting from January 2025, coverage will also be expanded in Kyushu, Okinawa and other areas. Rakuten has announced a collaboration with Ampere to improve data center efficiency and support sustainable AI compute. Trials so far have demonstrated a 36% reduction in energy consumption; Rakuten being the first company in Japan to deploy Ampere-based platforms at scale. Hironori Yoshida, Vice Director of Rakuten’s Cloud Platform Supervisory Department, commented, “As demand for compute increases with the adoption of AI, cloud operators need to look into platforms and solutions to realize more sustainable compute. [Breaking] Rakuten Card and Mizuho Bank announced the launch of the Mizuho Rakuten Card today at a press conference featuring Mickey Mikitani, Chairman and CEO of Rakuten Group, and Masahiro Kihara, President and Group CEO of Mizuho Financial Group. The new card is part of a broader business alliance between Rakuten and Mizuho which aims to reshape Japan’s digital payment landscape and enhance services for both retail and corporate customers.
