I did something scary today. I went on a podcast. Now, you might think, “What’s scary about that?” Well, when you’re building something, head down, grinding every day. You don’t pause to look back. You just keep going. But today, I said it out loud: - I started this recruiting business from nothing in 2016. No experience. - I had to restart after a failed first attempt that left me in debt. Rock bottom. - My first-year revenue was $12K. That’s not even survival money. - Now? We’ve crossed $4M+—and we’re still growing. It’s a wild feeling to put that journey into words. Because when you’re in it, it just feels like survival. But looking back, I feel it’s proof of what’s possible. I was accused of being a liar when I said— "I didn’t have a plan when I started my recruitment business." But it’s true. I didn’t have a roadmap. No perfect niche. (I do now, but I had to figure it out first.) What I did have was curiosity and a gut feeling that I should just start. So, I did. I called companies, reached out to recruiters, and sent messages that got ignored. Some calls flopped with zero interest, but some turned into real business. But here’s what actually worked: (beyond the usual ‘just start reaching out’ advice) - Trusting my gut: If a client felt like a good fit, I knew there were more like them. I went after them without overthinking. - Keeping it simple: No fancy CRM. No complicated tech. Just real conversations, real relationships, and real results. - Watching what made people say yes: I paid attention to what got hiring managers to open up, what made recruiters trust me, and what led to actual placements. Today, I have a clear strategy. A growing 670+ recruiters community. A business built on partnerships and trust. But the real WIN is that I figured out how to make recruiting work on my own terms. Companies still ask this question as if: - Life isn’t unpredictable. - The job will even exist in 5 years. - Employees stay that long anymore. Want a better question? Try: + "What excites you about this role?" + "What’s one thing you’re really good at?" + "What do you want to learn here?"
