At just five years old, Alexandra — a first-generation American with parents from El Salvador — brought home her first Read With Me Red Book Bag from Raising a Reader Massachusetts (RAR-MA) playgroup. That simple moment marked the start of a life-changing journey. As one of our first alumni to enter college, Alexandra exemplifies the transformative power of early literacy and the profound impact of Raising a Reader Massachusetts. But Alexandra’s story is just one of many. There are countless children who, like her, deserve the chance to thrive through early literacy. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by December 31, 2024, and we need your help to make it happen. Donate today and help us raise a generation of confident, lifelong learners!
关于我们
Our goal is to close the literacy opportunity gap among children birth to age six in under-resourced communities by helping families develop and practice shared home reading habits. The vision is to make interactive reading a joyful and rewarding routine for all families. We equip parents & caregivers to be their child’s first teacher, empowered to be active participants in their child’s education, impacting success in school and beyond. We meet families where they are – partnering with local and community organizations to host or deliver the Raising A Reader program in settings trusted by families. Parent and caregiver participation begins with our rotating signature red book bags that provide access to high-quality, developmentally-appropriate, culturally-relevant books in multiple languages. Our curriculum fosters awareness of the importance of early literacy, and helps families gain skills in evidence-based interactive reading strategies. Use of text messaging and other technologies reinforce the learning. Rigorous evaluation assesses the impact on caregiver behaviors. Our model is supported by more than 30 years of research showing that being regularly read to by a parent or caregiver before kindergarten is a crucial factor impacting a child’s academic success. Shared home reading habits foster brain development, vocabulary, and language skills essential to reading readiness.

We were excited to join other community organizations, including Jumpstart for Young Children and the local library, during a community engagement event held by the?Merrimack Valley YMCA?in Lawrence in late September. It gave our team, including Senior Program Manager Guadalupe Paname?o, the opportunity to connect with members of the community and highlight the high impact work being done by RAR-MA to combat the literacy opportunity gap within Massachusetts’ Gateway Cities. Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to connect with our team!

Studies have shown that the single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school ???? Through Raising a Reader MA’s Red Book Bag Rotation, we are engaging parents in their children’s literacy, promoting strong reading habits, and encouraging families to engage in book sharing in all of their household languages!
