“What does Penn State do for students who have been through the foster care system?" ??A new $50,000 gift and a $100,000 estate commitment from Penn State alumni and longtime donors and volunteers Alan Bedrick, MD and Sally (Pollock) Bedrick were inspired by Sally’s question. Penn State’s Fostering Lions program was founded in 2018 as the first program of its kind in Pennsylvania. The Alan and Sally Bedrick Program Support Endowment for Fostering Lions will strengthen the program's ability to offer financial support, academic and career planning, and assistance with things like housing and transportation. ?? Our college and community is mourning the loss of Jennifer Lawrence, assistant director of alumni relations, who died earlier this year. Lawrence worked for Penn State for 23 years and was with Penn State’s Division of Development and Alumni Relations for 13 of them. A love story rooted in Penn State has now found a permanent home in the Arboretum, thanks to a generous pledge from a couple of State College natives. The alum duo has committed an estate gift to name the Rose and Fragrance Garden—a space that played a significant role in their lives. ????? As children, they spent time at an experimental rose garden located on what would eventually become the Arboretum, unaware of their futures. Years later, the Arboretum transformed into their cherished retreat—it was on the garden’s secluded terrace, one of life’s most pivotal questions was asked and answered. With their generous gift, they aim to extend their love for this special place beyond their own story, ensuring that the Arboretum remains a source of beauty and connection for generations. For many, traditional talk therapy can seem daunting or ineffective. At a barn in Bellefonte, a different type of support is available: equine therapy. ?? Visitors to the Rising Hope Therapeutic Riding Center will be met with stalls of horses ready to help them process emotions, develop physical strength, and learn new skills that are essential in navigating everyday life. The legacy of Mike Micci, the late Penn State professor of aerospace engineering and expert on space propulsion, will live on through a newly established early career professorship in aerospace engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering.
