That escalated quickly. I run a small group on Facebook called Queer Expats Worldwide. The goal is to create an online space for LGBTQ+ expats and immigrants to help each other with the basics of moving abroad AND to celebrate global queer culture. We are not the majority in any country, we do not experience majority privilege in any country, we are at the top of no one's agenda - and yet our community and our cultures thrive in the face of adversity around the world.
As this election looms, US queers and our families are starting to get very VERY nervous about Biden losing, and Project 2025 coming into place in January. Over the last few days, as the conversation shifted from Biden's poor performance to the details of Project 2025 and Agenda47, membership in the Queer Expats Worldwide group has almost doubled. Activity is up 6500%.
What a lot of people don't realize is that as a same-sex couple, a same-sex couple with children (sometimes biological, sometimes adopted, sometimes both), as a trans person / couple / parent, when we want to move abroad to a certain country, we are often setting precedents. We are often the first same-sex couple a particular immigration employee has come across and rules might be gray, murky, subjective. There might not be actual laws about how a trans person immigrates, what their paperwork must include. We are the only collective space to suss out those answers.
We need each other. We need to understand how fellow LGBTQ folks have relocated, what their experiences were, where they feel safe, what the process was, and now, it feels like most people want to know what countries are safe for LGBTQ+ people and can also be processed quickly so that immigration can begin ASAP, should Project 2025 really start coming to fruition.
So while it has been super exciting to see the group grow over the last two days, I want to also encourage anyone who is LGBTQ+ and considering a move abroad, or an ally who wants to move to places where queer folks feel safe, please join the group, share the group, invite folks to the group - and then let's start asking questions and sharing answers so that we all feel a sense of unity here in the face of this looming, stressful future that we might be experiencing.

Thank you for sharing!
