We're honoring Black leaders who have shaped LGBTQIA+ rights for Black History Month. Today, we recognize Andrea Jenkins, writer, activist, and the first openly transgender Black woman elected to public office in the U.S. Visibility is more than just being seen; it’s about bringing awareness and action to the issues impacting trans and gender-diverse lives. As Andrea Jenkins puts it, “Visibility is important to bring awareness and attention to the issues that are impacting trans, gender non-conforming, gender fabulous, gender creative, gender expressive lives.” Her leadership continues to pave the way for a more inclusive and just future.

For Black History Month, we continue honoring Black leaders who have shaped LGBTQIA+ rights. Today, we celebrate Phill Wilson, HIV/AIDS activist and founder of the Black AIDS Institute. Phill Wilson has taught us that true leadership doesn’t rely on power or authority but on influence and respect: “Leaders who rely on power get burned, and yet, many of them rely on position or formal authority to get things done.” His words remind us that real change comes from collaboration, empathy, and the strength of community, not the force of hierarchy. ?? Join us in celebrating his legacy and the ongoing fight for health equity and justice.

?? Rainbow Alliance continues honoring Black leaders who have shaped LGBTQIA+ rights. Today, we celebrate Audre Lorde—poet, activist, and warrior for justice. Her words challenge us: “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” She called on us to move beyond fear and division, embracing the beauty in our diversity. True progress comes when we uplift each other, recognizing that our strength lies in unity.

For Black History Month, Rainbow Alliance is honoring Black leaders who have shaped LGBTQIA+ rights. We begin with Marsha P. Johnson, a fearless activist whose legacy still inspires the fight for equality today. She reminded us: “You never completely have your rights, one person, until you all have your rights.” Her words emphasize that true justice isn’t individual; it's collective. Equality for one community means nothing if others are left behind. Marsha fought not just for herself but for all marginalized people, reminding us that liberation must be for everyone. Join us in celebrating her impact and the ongoing fight for justice ??
