We're a government agency that supports libraries in northern and west-central Illinois.
关于我们
RAILS provides delivery service to support Illinois' vast interlibrary loan program and technology support for more than 600 libraries' shared online catalogs. Our services include continuing education and consulting resources to library employees and trustees, as well as e-book services, group purchases, and vendor discounts. We serve approximately 1300 private, public, school, and university library members, which have a total of more than 4200 library facilities in a 27,000 square mile area. Although the city of Chicago is within our boundaries, and a number of our member libraries are located in Chicago, the Chicago Public Library constitutes a separate library system. Members have several opportunities to network with each other through email lists, networking groups, member updates, and at networking events. We are governed by a Board of Directors, elected by member libraries. Library systems are established by state law (75 ILCS 10/, the Illinois Library System Act). Funding for Illinois Library Systems is provided through the Illinois State Library and the Secretary of State, with funds appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. RAILS was formed in 2011, from a merger of the Alliance, DuPage, Metropolitan, North Suburban, and Prairie Area library systems. --- Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) is a government agency that provides delivery, shared catalogs, resource sharing, CE, and communication services to all types of libraries in northern and west-central Illinois.

In times of uncertainty, libraries have historically become even MORE important to the communities that they serve. This time is no different. At RAILS, We Connect Libraries, and we will continue to do so with dedication and care for all we serve. Show Up #ForOurLibraries.
NEW: President Trump's executive order to eliminate the Institute of Museum & Library Services would have disastrous effects for communities nationwide. We call on all Americans who value reading and learning to reach out to their elected leaders. Read ALA's full response: https://lnkd.in/gEabB5t9

? ?? Fact: 95% of Illinois public libraries demonstrated a return on investment (ROI) for print materials greater than 100% in 2021. ROI is just one method libraries use to assess the impact of their investment in materials and programs. One thing is for certain: libraries are worth it. ? We talk about certified school librarianship all the time in Library Land, but what does that even mean? Janette and Leah break it down for you in "Let’s Get Certified” with Lauren Ochs (School Library Licensure Coordinator at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) and Hannah Fiedler (recently-certified school librarian). ?? Listen to Can't Shelve This on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and more. Do you ever wonder how RAILS is funded and can afford to provide resources to its members? Most of our funding is provided from the Illinois State Library and the Illinois Secretary of State. However, the Illinois State Library receives roughly 10% of their total budget from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is the primary source of federal funding for U.S. libraries and museums. The RAILS Board of Directors has prudently maintained a healthy financial reserve at RAILS, and we have strong partnerships with library organizations across the state. This allows us to continue supporting and connecting our libraries, even as federal changes are made.?
