Much like a successful Thanksgiving dinner, transportation systems require cooperation between many components (like deciding who hosts or brings the turkey). This Thanksgiving, we’re thankful for all the different components of transportation that keep us moving, whether we go 5 miles, 50, or 500. Everyone loves saving money, and given how expensive everything is, it’s probably a good idea for the states we live in to do the same. Passenger rail can help us do that. In a report we released in 2019 examining the economic impact of a second train to Minnesota (the Borealis route), we estimated that the states supporting the second train would save around $32,500,000 in highway maintenance. To put that in perspective, a state can build around 200-800 new apartment units or 100 homes with that money – housing for hundreds of people and new construction jobs. Talk about a win-win.

Colorado is putting forward a visionary plan to fund massive transportation improvements that will create more walkability, biking, and transit by 2035. This type of planning, especially on the funding side, is what we will need locally to continue to fund passenger rail and public transit even if federal support dies down during the new administration. The Northeast is often highlighted in terms of passenger rail. It receives extensive news coverage, social media posts, and online discussion. As the oldest association for passengers in the U.S., we care a lot about the Northeast, but we also are for more trains in more places. To bring attention to more regional rail that may not even be known outside of its ridership base, we will be spending the next few months spotlighting different passenger rail routes throughout the country, with a focus on passenger and commuter rail, including Amtrak routes (but we’ll make sure to also highlight ones outside of Amtrak). This series will focus on what exists outside of the Northeast Corridor and what makes it unique, beneficial, and valuable to its riders. 2025 is going to be a big year for passenger rail advocacy. We want to come back to Congress and agencies like Amtrak with stories of why passenger rail to make sure we get more trains in more places for more people. We’ll share your stories with them so they can see why more passenger rail benefits their constituents. - Government Agencies: Agencies like the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak play a massive role in passenger rail. By showing them the impact and value of passenger rail, we can advocate for passengers across the country. - Our Advocacy and Outreach: Whether it’s paid ads, our newsletters, or social media, we can amplify your stories to an audience of 30,000 people.
