🔍 Can you guess what this equipment is? Today, we're shining a light on the Charpy V-notch test! This fascinating test, guided by ASTM E23, measures how metals absorb energy during high-speed impacts. Why does it matter? Understanding how materials react to sudden, dynamic loads is crucial for industries like construction, manufacturing, and aerospace. By examining how a notched metal bar fractures under impact, we gain insights into its resistance to brittle fracture. Did you know? Twining is one of the few labs in Southern California equipped to perform this specialized testing.

Did you feel that? Monday's earthquake serves as a fresh reminder of California's seismic reality. History has taught us that each tremor offers valuable insights: • 1971 San Fernando quake led to reinforced concrete design improvements • 1994 Northridge quake prompted revisions in steel frame connections These events have continually shaped the California Building Code, enhancing safety standards. We apply these historical lessons to our work: 1. Analyzing post-earthquake data 2. Studying structural responses 3. Implementing findings in current projects 4. Collaborating on code updates Ready to earthquake-proof your project? Contact one of our experts today for a structural assessment and discover how we can enhance your building's seismic resilience. #CaliforniaEngineering #EarthquakeSafety #BuildingCodes #SeismicLessons

Wisdom Wednesday: Best Practices for Soil Compaction Testing In the construction industry, precise soil compaction is vital for project success, and the nuclear gauge is a key tool in achieving this. It measures soil density and moisture using radioactive sources, but its readings can sometimes be tricky to interpret. A best practice Paul Soltis, PE, GE recommends is pairing nuclear gauge results with manual moisture checks. This helps ensure accuracy by correcting discrepancies, especially for materials like crushed base or treated soils, where precise compaction is crucial. If you encounter unexpected results, revisiting your moisture content measurements can prevent errors and lead to successful outcomes. Implementing these practices can enhance reliability and efficiency in your projects. Do you have questions about soil compaction or other construction-related topics? We'd love to hear from you!
