关于我们
RAD-AID International is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and expanding radiology services in under-resourced and medically underserved regions of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that half of the world's population has no access to medical imaging (radiology), such as x-ray, ultrasound, and mammography. This disparity has contributed to inadequate health care among poor populations, such as for women's health (breast cancer screening and maternal-infant health), HIV-related disease, Tuberculosis, cancer, heart disease, and trauma because these diseases often require radiology for diagnosis and care. To address this worldwide problem, RAD-AID uses a multidisciplinary approach involving economic development, health care system evaluation, technology innovation, clinical education, and technical training to improve global radiology for delivering vital health services.

This September, RAD-AID supported our partnership with ISMRM through representation at the ISMRM African Chapter Conference in Tanzania. We thank RAD-AID technologist volunteer Chikumbutso Khomba and Nigerian partner radiologist, Dr. Ifeoma Nevobasi for representing RAD-AID at this important event to further MRI education and access across Africa. “Attending the conference provided me with invaluable learning... I look forward to applying the knowledge I gained to further my work, contribute and support RAD-AID in advancing MRI access and education in low resource countries.” -Chikumbutso Khomba, MRI Technologist, RAD-AID Volunteer "It was a highly informative, educative, insightful, enriching and memorable workshop...Listening, learning and sharing information and knowledge with experts got my memory rebooted and knowledge upgraded. In fact, I am stimulated and energized. This will definitely impact positively in my career as I have new ideas...to improve in research, patient diagnosis and patient care." -Dr. Ifeoma Nevobasi, Nigerian radiologist #RADAID #GlobalHealth #ISMRM

Program Spotlight: RAD-AID Guyana! Thanks to support from the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), Volunteer Recruitment Director for RAD-AID Ultrasound, Christina Hendricks, BS, RDMS, RMSKS, RVT, RT(R), was able to travel to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in Guyana to support the implementation and training of RAD-AID’s Tele-Ultrasound project. The Tele-Ultrasound program in Guyana includes providing real-time virtual education support and clinical hands-on, on-site support to residents conducting ultrasound exams. This program, supported by the Philips Foundation, spans across 10 different RAD-AID hospital sites around the world. Pictured here is the reading room at GPHC (top left), disinfection training (top right), the GPHC Radiology team (bottom left), and Christina with members of the GPHC sonography team (bottom right). “RAD-AID has worked consistently in Guyana since 2015, providing assistance in developing radiology services throughout the country. In 2021, RAD-AID signed an MOU with the Ministry of Health to help optimize and increase access to imaging services on a country-wide basis. In 2021, the first class of Guyanese radiology residents graduated. The radiology residency program is a collaborative effort between RAD-AID and GPHC, to train local radiologists and build the radiology workforce. RAD-AID has since implemented a robust sonography curriculum, which was first delivered virtually (2021-2022). RAD-AID plans to have regular sonography outreach trips to provide much needed on-site, clinical hands-on education to radiologists, residents, and sonographers.” -Christina Hendricks, Volunteer Recruitment Director, RAD-AID Ultrasound We thank the ASRT and the Philips Foundation for their continued partnership and incredible support in our global health efforts! ARGO appreciates the Prevent Cancer Foundation supporting cutting edge breast cancer AI research led by radiologists at OAU and LASUTH - Dr. Omisore, Prof Akinola, Dr. Jaiyesimi and Dr. Adeyemi
Can AI change the future of breast cancer early detection?? ? One of the Foundation’s global grantees, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, thinks so with a groundbreaking project underway in Nigeria.? ? The global initiative aims to revolutionize breast cancer diagnosis in low-resource settings by testing breast ultrasound AI decision support alongside tablet-based ultrasound. Their project is crucial as it bridges the gap in human resources and brings advanced AI tools, typically developed in high-income countries, to those who need them most. In the first half of their grant year, they were able to accomplish:? ? ? In-person training: Dr. Vikki Mango and Dr. Natalie Cain from MSKCC have successfully trained four Nigerian radiologists in using tablet-based breast ultrasound AI decision support.? ? Online AI course: Collaborating with informatics expert Ameena Elahi - MPA, RT(R), CIIP and RAD-AID International, the team designed and launched an “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” course for radiologists from low- and middle-income countries which has enrolled 50 participants.? ? Patient impact: They recruited over 70 Nigerian women who have undergone AI analysis of breast ultrasound images and diagnosed 48 breast cancers.? ? This #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, join us in celebrating these incredible advancements and the dedicated professionals—including project director Dr. Mango—making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. How else can we improve timely diagnosis and reduce the burden of advanced breast cancer worldwide? Let’s talk about it in the comments. ???

Supported by the Dr. Wassef E. Mikhail Memorial Chapters Grant, RAD-AID Maimonides Medical Center Chief Resident and Chapter Member, Dr. Nathaniel Patel was able to travel to Indonesia to Gedung A. Rumah Sakit Dr. Cipto Mangunkusomo (RSCM) in Jakarta, and RSUP Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung. “I believe one of the successes I had personally was my lectures. The residents were all engaged and seemed challenged by the cases I showed. They all were very knowledgeable. I had a great time with the other RAD AID staff from the nuclear medicine team [in Bandung]. They were all very nice and welcomed me into their group with open arms. My time in Indonesia was truly eye-opening. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the?Radiology residents and was able to see?first hand how their Residency process compares?to ours. I was exposed to?complex pathology that we only read about in textbooks. It was a privilege to see how Radiology functions in Indonesia.” - Dr. Nathaniel Patel, Maimonides Chief Resident & Chapter Member, RAD-AID Indonesia Volunteer Is your institution ready to activate or renew your RAD-AID Chapter?
