Racine Railroad Products was formed in 1970, but did you know that the company’s roots date back to 1906? Here’s a brief timeline of the origins of RRP. 1906: Racine Gas Engine Company was formed. 1907: The company developed a power hacksaw with an automatic lift for the saw blade, eliminating the drag on the backstroke. 1910: The company became Racine Tool & Machine Co., sometimes referred to as Racine Tool Machinery Co. 1913: Racine Tool & Machine Co. made headlines for slicing a meteor. The Foote Mineral company of Philadelphia, which furnished specimens to museums had received an 800 lb. meteor from South Africa. After trying unsuccessfully to slice it, they heard about the Racine metal cutting machine and shipped it off. Racine Tool & Machine Co. cut the first slice off the mass in 16 hours and shipped it to Philadelphia. The Foote Mineral company was so pleased with the work that they immediately ordered a machine.??? 1920: Malcolm Erskine, president of Racine Tool & Machine Co. purchased the company. 1930s: The company added hydraulic products. 1945: At the request of the Santa Fe Railroad, the company developed a line of lightweight, gas-driven railway maintenance equipment, which included ballast tampers, rail saws and bond drills. 1952: Name changed to Racine Hydraulics & Machine Co. 1960s: Chief engineer William McIlrath developed a chassis mounted on the rails that removed ballast from under the ties in preparation for maintenance work. 1970: Racine Hydraulics merged with Rex Chainbelt. The machinery division was sold to long-time employee George W. Chistiansen, and Racine Railroad Products was formed. #railroad #maintenanceofway Source: Racine Journal Times archives?

The Mineral Point Railroad Museum is Wisconsin’s oldest surviving railroad depot. The two-story limestone structure was built in 1856 by stonemasons John Toay and Philip Allen. In the 1830s when Mineral Point’s early settlers began mining lead there were few navigable roads to move the lead to market. The Mineral Point Railroad (MPRR) was formed in 1851 to connect with the Illinois Central Railroad (ICRR) in Warren, IL. The first train arrived from Warren in June 1857. In the late 1870s, many smaller railroads were merged. The Milwaukee Road purchased the Mineral Point Railroad in 1880. Zinc became a valuable export in Southwestern Wisconsin, and the railroad helped the Mineral Point Zinc Company to eventually become one of the nation’s largest zinc oxide facilities. The structure also functioned as a passenger depot until 1929. The rails were removed in 1984, and the depot remained vacant until restoration began in 2000. The Mineral Point Depot was reopened to the public in 2004. It’s located at 11 Commerce St and open seasonally May through October. The Mineral Point Railroad Museum is one of only a few remaining pre-Civil War depots in the United States. #railroad #railroadhistory #wisconsinhistory Sources: Mineral Point Railroad Museum, Wikipedia, Wisconsin Historical Society?
