We're already up to 10 volunteers for the 1AM - 7AM witching hours volunteer and pacing shift. Comment below if you are interested, as you have 9 months to think about it and will just go on our mailing list. No commitment necessary....yet!

100 miles of running ALWAYS requires more than just 100 miles of running. We’re inviting bold, adventurous types to join us on an epic journey. No, you won’t actually run 100 miles, and your journey only lasts 6 hours. Read on. The Umstead 100 Mile Endurance Run is an annual event held deep in the woods of Umstead Park every April. Hundreds of runners push themselves to absolute limits, aiming to conquer either a 50 or 100-mile ultramarathon in under 30 hours. Most who finish say that it wouldn’t have happened without one key element – the race volunteers. The teamwork and camaraderie evidenced between these runners and race volunteers is unparalleled in sport. What’s even more unparalleled is the volunteer experience between the hours of 1:00AM and 7:00AM. ?During these hours, running a 10-15 mile lap with, serving food to, talking to, or otherwise supporting an athlete who is in the back half of their quest to complete 100 miles will scar you deeply - in the best of ways. RaceReach is building a team of volunteer pacers and supporters (to cook, cheer, serve food and more) to commit to the 2025 race’s overnight hours of 1AM to 7AM. These hours are known by runners and race organizers as "the witching hours." Why are these the witching hours? Because three challenging factors converge during this timeframe: 1) First time and repeat 100 mile runners attempting to complete the event in 30 hours are often struggling and sometimes drop out in this time window. A volunteer pacer or supporter can be the difference between drop out or finish - just via encouragement (or pacing for a lap). 2) 100 mile runners who are attempting to complete the event in 24 hours for a special belt buckle (yes, a belt buckle is the 24 hour finisher prize) are pushing extra hard in attempt to make the cutoff. Again, encouragement and support is key. 3) Volunteers tend to be harder to find during humanity's “sleeping hours.” Your friends and family will be sleeping while you are living your best life - in the woods supporting crazy-ish athletes. What could be better? If you are interested in an epic, dark, fun and life changing experience, consider joining the 2025 RaceReach Umstead volunteer team. You don’t have to commit right now, but we’ll keep you informed as the event approaches. Remember, as a volunteer, you get to choose to run as many laps with an athlete you’ve never met before OR volunteer at aid stations or in camp helping out with other less strenuous duties. You can choose in the weeks leading up to the race. Let us know via DM, in the comments below, or via email if you are looking for this kind of adventure. Those who ultimately join us won't be sorry (we hope).

According to great new and insightful data from Running USA, the number of running events shrunk year-over-year in March, while overall running participation continued to grow. While many believe that these growing participation numbers result from some sort of continued COVID rebound, there is more to it than that. We are hearing and reading that many of the best and oldest running events in North America are experiencing their LARGEST REGISTRATION NUMBERS EVER in 2024. We know this from stories provided by Running USA and from the great running event registration providers, who continue to share data and highlights from the events they support. More people are running. More people are looking for great running events. The most well established and time-tested events will continue to grow. However, on a more challenging note, here at the RaceReach HQ in Raleigh, NC, it is becoming clear that obtaining city and county permits and approvals for NEW running events has become increasingly difficult (due to requested road closures, police costs, city council priorities, etc). We believe this to be a national trend based on what we hear from the industry. Expect more discussions about this challenge in coming months.

8,500 runners ran through beautiful Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolinas in Tarheel Ten Miler on Saturday. This unique event continues to grow, just like so many others in North Carolina and all across North America. The Tarheel Ten Miler is special in so many ways, including its three non-traditional distance choices for runners: 1) A ten mile course 2) A four mile course 3) The "Double Down" for runners brave enough to run the 4 miler then SIDESTEP THE FINISH LINE to re-enter the starting schute and run the 10 miler with the ten mile runners. Wow. Congrats to the team Capstone Event Group, who managed this event. RaceReach is thrilled to be a partner of the Tarheel Ten Miler.

The 10 best marathons in the United States for 2024 list, created by USA TODAY editors and voted on by readers, dropped on April 3. While there were a handful of expected picks, there were also some top-notch surprise picks. We're thrilled that one of North Carolina's own, The Coast Guard Marathon in Elizabeth City, made the list. If you haven't participated in an event in NC, you're missing out on great beaches, great mountains and great experiences! **If you live in NC, you know exactly what we're talking about.** #racereach #marathon #running

The acceleration into run, cycle, swim endurance and health continues. This recent headline from The Guardian is another example of people deciding to point their "addictions" (we all have them) towards endurance events. As far as addictions go, this is terrific. It also means even more room for the local 5k, sprint triathlon or fitness walking events in all of our backyards. Endurance doesn't start with 100 or 140.6 miles, but it might result in some of us getting there! Running USA | USA Triathlon | Trail Runner Foundation
