⚠️ Did you know that arc flash incidents account for over 30,000 electrical injuries each year? These events are sudden, dangerous, and can lead to life-altering injuries—or worse. This new resource provides tips on identifying and assessing risks, using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and implementing safer workplace practices. ⚡️ Substations manage the flow of electricity for more than 68% of U.S. energy consumption, serving residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Without them, the delivery of reliable power would be nearly impossible! Let's take a look at a recent project where our team had the privilege of providing engineering and design services for a powerful 500kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) for a valued client in Virginia... Our scope of work included designing GIS platforms and foundations, GIS building lighting, grounding systems, power control for the GIS, and ventilation systems—all critical components to ensure the substation’s reliability and most importantly, safety. Substations like this one are the backbone of our modern power infrastructure, but what sets this particular project apart? ➡️ That all-important "G" in GIS. Unlike AIR Insulated Substations (AIS), GIS are: 1. More compact (up to 10x smaller!)—making them ideal for urban and space-constrained environments. 2. More reliable, with less exposure to environmental factors like moisture and debris. 3. More efficient, reducing energy loss and delivering power with precision. Happy Ada Lovelace Day! 🌟 Ada Lovelace, widely considered as the FIRST computer programmer, was captivated by machines from an early age, even designing steam-powered flying machines during the Industrial Revolution. She went on to collaborate with Charles Babbage on The Analytical Engine, a precursor to the modern computer, and in 1842, she found fame when she expanded on an article by an Italian mathematician, highlighting the power of machines to manipulate symbols. Her legacy paved the way for future generations of women to break barriers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
