The Bucyrus 15B excavator is a staple of RWC history! The 15B was used extensively throughout the construction industry in the 1950s and 60s, and RW Collins was no exception. These machines were a familiar sight at gas stations throughout the Chicago metro area. They began to slowly disappear in the 1970s when hydraulic excavators emerged and replaced their old cable counterparts. The cable systems were much more difficult to operate than hydraulic models. Operators, including RW himself, sat very close to the cable system which ran practically inside the cab! Thankfully, modern technology has made excavators a lot safer, quieter, and more efficient. A few years ago, the opportunity arose to buy this piece of RWC history. Now displayed in our front lot, it serves as a reminder of our nearly 80 years in business and commemorates our roots.

RWC crews recently had the opportunity to showcase our versatility on a project in Evanston. We safely removed aging infrastructure from a former auto shop in a historic building, including a hydraulic lift, floor pistons, and reservoir tanks. RWC recently performed pond excavation at a medical facility in Northwest Indiana. To ensure the safety of the project, we first needed to implement a water barrier system. These pictures show an inflatable lightweight dam that was pulled across the pond for installation. Once set in place, we pumped over 20,000 gallons from the pond into the dam. With the water level in the dig area now lower, we effectively and safely completed the excavation tasks.

Our experienced crew excavated and placed soil to create a network of trails and play areas for the community to enjoy. Using a CAT 315 excavator and CAT 259 skid steer we safely and efficiently repurposed excess soil to build new roads and trails.
