    ??Welcome to QURECA’s weekly news update! ?? ?? Microsoft launches world’s first topological qubit chip Microsoft has launched the Majorana 1, a first of its kind chip which employs a new and unique kind of qubit architecture. The system features a novel material called a topological superconductor, or topoconductor, to create and manage Majorana particles, a fascinating, previously-theoretical, species which feature highly-attractive properties for fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC), including inherent noise-resilience and compact qubit scalability. In short, the researchers have realised nanowire devices combining semiconductor and superconductor materials, in this case indium arsenide and aluminium, which, when cooled to near-absolute zero and influenced by external magnetic fields, produce Majorana zero modes, MZMs, at the wire ends.?? How does this work? Qubits are realised using MZMs by encoding whether the nanowire has an odd or even number of electrons in an instance. Traditional superconductors feature electrons bound into even-numbered pairs, known as Cooper pairs, which allow odd unpaired electrons to be detected through their energetic signature within the system, forming the basis of several superconducting qubit architectures; topological qubits operate in a fundamentally similar way though unpaired electrons are instead bound to the MZMs and ultimately hidden from the environment. The nanowire ends are then digitally coupled to a neighbouring quantum dot crystal which can be used to infer the MZMs state without disturbing it. This hardware-enabled noise resilience promises significant performance capabilities over other traditional architectures. The announcement followed a Nature publication outlining their work on Majorana particles as well as pre-print roadmap to employ them in order to achieve FTQC. ?? US DOE quantum funding gets big backing Lastly, the Department of Energy Quantum Leadership Act of 2025 has been proposed to support R&D projects with USD$2.5 billion funding until 2030. The new 6-part plan would reauthorise the DOE’s quantum efforts, allowing its five national research centres to build upon their foundational work, expand private industry engagement, support growing workforce demands and much more. The act has received significant endorsement from university and research organisations as well as tech giants such as IBM and hewlette packard.? ?? New QLDPC codes beat surface coding on all performance metrics New Quantum Low-Density Parity Check (QLDPC) capabilities from Photonic Inc. show significant improvement in efficiency over traditional quantum error correction techniques. In general, QEC requires logical qubits, clusters of many physical qubits entangled together, which are optimised using software approaches, such as surface coding, to ensure errors are actively mitigated. Their new QLDPC-based Subsystem Hypergraph Product Simplex (SHYPS) codes are the first to demonstrably reduce QEC hardware requirements for systems with high qubit connectivity - including 20x reduction in physical qubit overheads, 30x reduction in circuit runtime, and meets all formal requirements for fault-tolerant operation. ?? Quantum Benchmarking to explore two discrete hardware options Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have recently announced the selection of Microsoft and PsiQuantum to for the Validation and Co-Design stages of the Underexplored Systems for Utility-Scale Quantum Computing (US2QC) programme. More than 50 DARPA professionals chose the superconducting topological qubit and silicon-based photonic qubit experts, respectively, from an extensive list of applicants to evaluate their final utility-scale system design, conduct testing, and assess performance capabilities of prototypes. Successful applicants to DARPA’s fellow programme, Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, are set to be announced soon for launch of Stage A - describing plausible pathways to near-term realisation of utility-scale quantum computing. ??
