In light of today's markets, let's talk about ??VOLATILITY?? In real life, "volatile" refers to something unstable, and rarely in a good way. The same applies to investing—instability (or volatility) is rarely viewed as something good. But instability isn't always negative, and the same goes for volatility. * Let's consider this chart of two hypothetical stocks. * The blue and black stock both start and end at $100. * The blue stock goes through significantly more ups and downs along the way; it's more volatile. For professional traders, these big price swings can create opportunities to buy and sell and make money. But for someone holding the investment long-term, the blue and black investment created the same results in the same time frame. So why is volatility considered negative? Well, if you need to sell the blue investment at any point along the way, you risk losing money—you might be forced to sell during a dip. At the same time, it can create opportunity—you might luck out and sell at a high. * For most investors, trying to "time" these swings hurts rather than helps. * Data routinely shows that active trading among retail investors underperforms a buy-and-hold strategy. * This is one of the many reasons that we suggest ignoring short-term volatility. * Often these headlines are "noise" that can take a back seat to long-term performance. Of course, it's helpful to be aware of what's happening—your timeframe may change and short-term volatility has the potential to evolve into a long-term trend. And we'll be sure to stay on top of both of those topics during our client check-ins.

Cable news shows love to talk about the ""big money"" or the ""smart money"" ... but who are they actually talking about? Often, these phrases simply refer to institutions with large sums to invest and indefinite timelines. While the nature of institutional funds make them inherently different from individual investors... there's still plenty of lessons to be learned. https://lnkd.in/gAPpy2mi

BOTH clean energy and oil performed poorly in 2024, despite a Biden Administration that went all-in on the former, and a Trump administration pledging to go all-in on the latter. So what happened? We dig in in our 2024 winners and losers roundup. https://lnkd.in/gmgg2BG7

The Fed's first rate meeting of the year happens this week, and it could set the tone for 2025. Remember: The Fed signaled it may slow the pace of rate cuts going forward, and experts are concerned that Trump's economic policies could trigger a new wave of inflation. Beyond that, Trump's team hasn't been shy about their dislike of Fed Chair Jerome Powell (despite initially appointing him in 2018). Tl/dr? We could see some sparks come out of this week's meeting.

Enough time has passed since the end of #Yellowstone that we're confident we can say this without spoilers... If John Dutton and his wife had taken out a life insurance policy, specifically a second-to-die policy... Kacey and Beth might have had way more options when it came to tackling the estate tax on the ranch. In fact, it's one of the reasons we sometimes recommend our clients look into life insurance. ?? https://lnkd.in/gZSq6XDU

Why would you sell a winning investment if you don't need the cash? Balance! If one of your investments (say stocks) is outperforming the others (like bonds), you may end up with a higher concentration of stocks than bonds in the future. Periodic rebalancing can help with that. Rebalancing helps you: - Manage risk - Invest toward a goal - Work to preserve capital Learn more about rebalancing and how we approach it at Quorum: https://lnkd.in/gCtEbg9p
