?? The New Agrarian Program Manager Fellowship is officially launched! The fantastic group of 12 new fellows gathered at Paicines Ranch last weekend for the program kick-off, which included a ranch and vineyard tour, a leadership training, a 2-day enterprise design workshop led by Dave Pratt, and many delicious meals together. Thanks to all who contributed to a wonderful event. Let's get down to business!

Join in as photographer Sally Thomson talks with Quivira's executive director, Sarah Wentzel-Fisher at Sally's photography exhibition, CULTIVATING HOMEGROUND, which explores the vast rangelands that make-up over 1/3 of our country’s land mass and the people dedicated to transforming how we care for that land. The evening will include an opportunity to explore the gallery, savor light refreshments, and enjoy an engaging talk with Sally and Sarah. Dec. 5, 5-7 p.m. Discussion at 6 p.m. Gallery @ Co-Fe in Santa Fe

"The moon is rising above the canyon walls and I can hear the big horned owl calling out from the cottonwoods. The high energy of summer is dwindling, and I find myself retreating to the warmth of my cabin as the darkness sets in earlier each day. I stretch my hands to release the tension from stacking a Montana winter’s worth of firewood over the past few days, tarped in anticipation of the impending snow. I can’t help but ruminate on my own seasonality, embodied in the tasks I check off each fall and mirrored by the transformation I witness outside my door. Like the grasses descending into dormancy, I find myself shifting from an external existence to an inner, conserving energy, and refocusing on my roots.? ? I grew up in a cabin in the Sawtooth Mountains, not unlike the one I now inhabit outside of Bozeman, although my current quarters boast some modern luxuries like indoor plumbing and a year-round road that I was a stranger to back then. I was raised by two biologists who taught me about the land and the neighbors we shared it with. The seasons were marked by the comings and goings of the curlew who nested in our pastures, the pronghorn who dropped fawns in the sage steppe, and stopovers of snow geese on their way south, as well as our own cycles of food-getting. By planting a garden each spring, tending animals in the barn, and filling our freezer with game each fall, I developed a sense of my own relationship with the land and the web of life we are part of." Not a week goes by when we’re not inspired by the work that so many of you are doing to create resilience on working lands across the west. Whether you’re training the next generation of ranchers, building your own compost piles, or sharing our podcasts with your friends, you continue to push forward to impact our communities and landscapes. The work is not done, though. We are incredibly grateful for your support and for continuing to show that our focus on creating resilience on working lands is meaningful, necessary, and timely. Please consider donating to Quivira on or before #GivingTuesday, December 3. https://lnkd.in/g3eHWqt2

"Last week, the REGENERATE Conference brought together more than 500 people in Denver. Weathering days of snowfall and processing election results, attendees gathered to learn and share about regenerative agriculture, generating a buzz of interest, discussion, and determination. At the close of the conference, I stood beside a few folks I know from my previous work, when I ran the farmer training program at the Old Fort at Hesperus, near Durango, Colorado. 'How are you?' I asked one [Re]Generation Fellow, a beginning farmer I’ve worked with for two growing seasons. 'Exhausted,' they confessed. 'And excited! Do you want to join our new National Young Farmers Coalition chapter?' ? I thanked them for the invitation and declined, pledging my support as a community member should the chapter need it. While I’m happy to hear about the formation of this new chapter, I no longer identify as young, or as a farmer, and instead find my place in the regenerative agriculture movement through my professional work. This fall, I joined Quivira as the Education and Outreach Program director, and I’m delighted to be working with the team to put on workshops and otherwise support farmers, ranchers, and land stewards in New Mexico and southern Colorado – and beyond. I’m looking forward to getting to know and continuing to expand Quivira’s land stewardship community, while continuing to foster the land-based relationships I’ve formed in my nearly 10 years in southwest Colorado." ?? On the latest episode of Down to Earth, hear about a partnership that is saving ranchers time and money, allowing more adaptive and flexible grazing, and gives wildlife free range. The Nature Conservancy partners with ranchers on virtual fencing — a new technology that keeps animals in delimited areas through GPS collars — resulting in labor saving, wildlife conservation, and land health. Our guests are William Burnidge of The Nature Conservancy and Danna Camblin of Camblin Livestock. William is the deputy director of The Nature Conservancy's Regenerative Grazing Lands strategy in North America and Danna is owner of Camblin Livestock in Colorado who has been successfully employing virtual fencing for the last few years.
