Proud we could take this strategic plan and make the physical changes to support it.
As you walk through the doors of the Saline District Library (SDL), set on a 14-acre wooded property, it’s clear that this is a place where community, innovation, and nature converge. Under the leadership of Library Director Karrie Waarala, SDL has embarked on a large scale renovation to better serve its 28,000 residents. The updates aren’t just about new furniture or fresh paint—they’re about transforming how the library connects with its patrons and fulfills its mission. It was an honor and joy to speak at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new "Albemarle Career Exploration Academy" alongside the elected officials and academic leaders that had the vision and foresight to plan and execute this transformational building. We navigated the post-pandemic academic landscape and engaged with students, parents, teachers, businesspeople and community leaders to ensure that the impact this Academy brings to Albemarle County will transcend its walls and be the beating heart of life-long learning for decades to come. The building is tracking USGBC LEED Gold Certification and follows The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Framework for Design Excellence. Features include geothermal heating/cooling, rooftop photovoltaic power generation, extensive biophilic and wellness design features, and material resource reduction strategies. Big thank you to my design team at Quinn Evans, our design partners at 2RW Consultants, Inc., Dunbar, Timmons Group and Food Service Consulting Studio, and of course our clients at Albemarle County Public Schools!

Thank you to the AIA Young Architects Forum for joining us on a tour of William Fox Elementary School's ongoing transformation! We're glad we got to share this important preservation work with the next generation of architects. Since the devastating fire, much of the building was lost, but we have remained committed to its restoration and honoring its legacy while integrating 21st-century learning environments for future generations. Senior interior designer, Lauren Comet, CID, IIDA, LEED AP, led the students and explored: ??The balance of restoration and modernization in school design ??Challenges in securing historic tax credits for education facilities ??The integration of new fire safety, mechanical, and energy-efficient systems ??Layout changes to eliminate temporary classrooms #QuinnEvans #HistoricPreservation #SchoolDesign #Richmond #Learning #YoungArchitects #FutureArchitects
