This is a very informative article from Peggy Hollinger & Yasemin Craggs Mersinoglu with Financial Times that describes many of the current regulatory issues in LEO-land. Our additional thoughts: This entire discussion relates to the shared Ku and Ka-band spectrum being used by the megaconstellations. For shared spectrum in the Ku and Ka-bands keep in mind: 1. NGSO systems must yield to GSO systems. 2. Among NGSOs, priority spectrum rights are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority rights used to carry huge benefits, but thanks to advances in antennas and beamforming tech, it is less significant. 3. Theses higher power limits have no impact on other LEOs but cause interference with GEOs. We would love to know, but haven’t seen, how these higher power limits impact Starlink’s performance. 4. This does not apply to the MSS players (i.e., Iridium, Inmarsat, Globalstar, etc.) that all have dedicated satellite spectrum that was awarded in the 1990s. Note – all of the MSS frequency bands are located at the low end of the electromagnetic spectrum (i.e., VHF, S-, L-band), making them unsuitable for broadband applications but good for DTD and IoT. https://lnkd.in/dkzX8sP6

There were three SmallSat acquisitions in the first weeks of August: Spain’s largest military contractor, Indra, acquired Deimos, a smallsat mission specialist; Redwire acquired smallsat manufacturer Hera Systems; and Lockheed Martin acquired smallsat manufacturer Terran Orbital. These acquisitions have led some to speculate that the smallsat market is experiencing active consolidation. Others argue that it reflects other, smaller trends within smallsat, including vertical integration of manufacturing capabilities, military demand for satellites, and competition in the space launch industry.
