*Trigger Warning* An excerpt from Jenn Mangini’s upcoming memoir, A Shadow of Me #oklahomacitybombing - Coming early 2025 “The Southwest Bell building had become the hub for us and other government agencies to use and operate out of as well as the US Post office because of the proximity and location. So we go to where we are supposed to talk about our feelings (which as a young strong soldier and someone who was always taught to ‘suck it up,’ ‘don’t cry,’ and ‘shake it off’ - well, my answer was usually one word. Fine. Oh, you and I know I was far from it, but I was not aware of it or maybe better said, I did not know how to articulate or explain anything. Besides, I was in soldier mode. Also, we were in the uniforms we had been wearing for the long shift, picking up and going through… victims. I mean, I already told you that death smells different, and this horror brought the worst out in those people. So sitting in a circle, all of us smelly and physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted, we said as little as possible so we could get out of there and decompress ourselves with hot showers and alcohol. At least that’s what I did, except before we could leave, I glanced down at my boot. It was not shiny. It was black leather, but there was gray matter all over my left boot. I froze. My breath caught in my throat, a mix of horror and disbelief. The others on my team followed my gaze at my boot, because maybe I was saying my one word answers of ‘fine’ or maybe I gasped. I do not know. Whoever was in charge said, “Hey, Mangini, they have a makeshift PX at the post office. Why don’t you walk over and grab some new boots.” I nodded in agreement, which was not like me, but this was not a normal situation as you already know.” #jennifermangini #armyveteran #alfredpmurrahfederalbuilding #trauma #ptsd #oklahomahistoricalsociety #oklahomacity #oklahoma #history #groundzero #fema #memorial #survivortree #reflectingpool #TimothyMcVeigh #TerryNichols #MichaelJFortier

The first time we read his poems, we cried. One of his poems, Returning Vet’s Saga, is in the novel SNOW IN SEATTLE by Amy M. Le (chapter 12). Quill Hawk Publishing is beyond thrilled to welcome Charles Peters to our family! Charlie Peters has been married for 50 years and has four children, nine grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He accidently started writing poetry in 1990 and discovered that poetry proved to be an outlet to release the frustration of PTSD symptoms. He wrote poetry for about ten years. Two of his poems were runner-ups in national poetry contests—“A Man Less Than His Best” and “Stairway.” Then he shifted his writing efforts to political commentary and satire, which two of his published books resulted from those commentaries— “The National Debt? The Sinking of America!” (2008) and “TEA Time Has Arrived ‘We the People’ Versus Washington Bureaucracy.” (2009). He has now decided to publish many of the poems he wrote in the 1990s and this book is a result of his poetry writing. “Returning Vet’s Saga: The Healing Power of Poetry” is a work that may appeal to those suffering from unexplained moments of anger, frustration, frightening nightmares, and unexplained moments of depression, which may be accompanied by a down pouring of tears. The author experienced all of those symptoms after returning from the military and the symptoms lasted for about fifteen years, before those symptoms even had a name which we now call “PTSD.” The author found that a sound, a smell, a spoken word, another’s voice inflection, or something as simple as a commercial on television can trigger an episode of PTSD. There is no magic in poetry. However, the magic comes in being able to put feelings to paper, coming directly from the heart and completely bypassing the brain. We may not think of ourselves as poets, but if we just let the words flow we may find that we are in fact poets of a special kind. This book ends with the poem that got it all started. #poetry #author #poet #vietnamvet #healing #surviving #ptsd #charliepeters #returningvetssaga #indiepublishing #hybridpublishing #quillhawkpublishing #charlespeters

@quillhawkpublishing is excited to welcome @maliaintokyo to our family as a copy editor! Malia Marshall Ogawa is an editor, writer, historian, and educator living abroad in Tokyo, Japan. She obtained her BA in History with a Minor in French at Lake Forest College and her MA in Modern History at King’s College London, and began working as a writer following her graduation. She has 10+ years of experience in both copy and content, as well as 7+ years as an English language educator. This makes her indispensable as an editor. Malia is an avid reader and writer, and some of her prime interests include history, food, culture, travel, feminism, and identity. #copyediting #contenteditor #mixedasian #writer #historian #bookworm #feminism #japan #editor #educator #japanese #hawaiian #european #american #strongwomen #quillhawkpublishing

Mike Swain (aka LMG/Larry Mike Garmon) is the award-winning author of 15 YA novels from Simon & Schuster, Penguin, and Grossett & Dunlap. He also writes under his alter ego, Edwin A. Dark. Mike spent 40 years teaching high schoolers in many subjects including comparative mythology, speculative fiction, ancient & classical literature, creative writing, and guitar. Fifteen of those years were in Altus, OK, where he won Teacher of the Year in 2010. Having grown up on Twilight Zone, One Step Beyond, Alfred Hitchcock, and all those 50s schlock science fiction and horror movies, he naturally gravitated to writing Science Fiction, Horror, and even a bit of Fantasy. He once tried to write a romance novel, but it turned into a horror novel by chapter two. Mike retired to free up time for writing but has kept his proverbial “foot in the door” of education. These days, you can find “TaleRider” Mike on his Harley-Davidson Motor Company bike in a kilt and telling funny jokes as VP of the Oklahoma Writers Federation Inc. #writer #author #teacher #scottish #talerider #contestjudge #writingcontest #quillhawkpublishing #teacher #harleylife #scotirish #horror #pychologicalthriller
