A New Year always makes me reflect on the years gone by and with anxious excitement anticipate the future. One would say I’ve had a rather unconventional journey. Not even completing high school, university once felt like a distant dream. Overcoming countless hurdles, I am incredibly proud and humbled to be selected as one of 87 New Colombo Plan Scholars from Griffith University since its inception in 2014—and one of just 15 scholars this year! This year, I’m particularly honoured to represent both Griffith University and the Queensland College of Art and Design (QCAD) as one of only three NCP Scholars ever in the Bachelor of Design field, and the only scholar majoring in Interior and Spatial Design. For me, design is so much more than creating beautiful spaces or objects. It’s about using creativity, empathy, and critical thinking to make meaningful contributions to society. Design has the power to shape lives, build communities, and create inclusive, functional solutions that address some of the biggest challenges facing our world today. I’m particularly passionate about inclusive and adaptive design, focusing on creating accessible housing solutions for marginalised groups and aging communities. This is more than an academic pursuit—it’s deeply personal. ?? As an Indigenous Australian who grew up in a low socioeconomic environment, I’ve experienced the struggles of social housing firsthand. ?? As a parent raising a child with a disability, I’ve witnessed the critical importance of accessible environments. ?? And recently, after losing my father to suicide—partly due to a lack of accessible and affordable housing—I’ve seen how deeply this issue can affect lives. These experiences drive my mission: to design for good, create meaningful change, and advocate for housing as a fundamental human right. Everyone, regardless of their background, deserves a safe, accessible, and affordable place to call home. During my 19-month NCP program in Japan, I look forward to immersing myself in Japan’s innovative approaches to universal design, barrier-free housing, and community-centric developments. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn from a country renowned for its expertise in small-scale living spaces, intergenerational housing, and flexible zoning laws. At the same time, I hope to contribute meaningfully by sharing my perspective as an Australian emerging designer with a passion for inclusive housing. My goal is to collaborate with Japanese designers and communities, fostering a two-way exchange of ideas and experiences that enrich both sides. To my fellow designers, changemakers, and advocates: let’s continue to use design as a tool to create a more inclusive, sustainable, and compassionate world. Congratulations to the multiple Queensland College of Art & Design (Griffith University) alumni who are featured across major events right now. The latest Asia Pacific Triennale (APT11) at QAGOMA features the work QCAD alum Yuriyal Bridgeman, Ana Estrada, D Harding and Kim Ah Sam. Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art (CAIA) staff, alum and students collaborated with Aotearoa artist collective Paemanu, to produce ‘Paemanu: Awe Toi’, a work that features unique traditions, cultural exchange and NgÄi Tahu visual culture. APT11 is expected to receive an audience of over 700,000 people. The Queensland Museum ‘Say Our Name’ exhibition features the work of CAIA alumni Kyra Mancktelow, Dylan Mooney and Darren Blackman. This nationally significant event highlights the histories and lived experiences of Australian South Sea Islanders and brings into focus the community’s tumultuous history in Queensland. A timely exhibition that highlights the necessity for continued focus on reconciliation. The success of our alumni is a clear testament to the exceptional standard of QCAD at an international level, preparing our students to not only excel but to lead at the forefront of their fields. It is events like APT11 that highlight the powerful impact of our alumni and their nationally recognised success. It’s important to highlight that the CAIA program is the only degree of its kind in Australia: taught exclusively by First Nations academic staff for First Nations students in the field of visual arts and design. Its success depends on staff continually navigating western university systems to ensure our students are adequately supported and provided with culturally led curriculum. Dr Carol McGregor (Program Director), Warraba Weatherall (Senior Lecturer) and Carmen Perez (Indigenous Engagement Officier) are exceptional leaders and innovators in this space. Their impact extends to all QCAD students who have the opportunity to engage in courses that focus on building inter-cultural capacity and Cultural Protocol competency. We are immensely proud of our alumni for carrying forward our schools legacy of excellence and for contributing to events of such significance. 2024 marked the year I took over the reins of the Queensland College of Art and Design Instagram account, and wow - what a journey it’s been! ?? Engagement levels went through the roof, and it’s been an absolute joy connecting with our incredible students and alumni. From showcasing student work to highlighting alumni achievements, every post, story, and reel has been a celebration of what makes QCAD special. A special shout-out to my fantastic colleagues who (voluntarily!) became content creation stars for our reels - you brought such a good humour and authenticity that truly resonated with our audience. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the QCAD socials such a vibrant space ? Please enjoy this gorgeously heartwarming wrap up video from the academic, professional and technical staff members, here's to 2025!

Two years ago, I was a nervous little pickle, facing the daunting process of coming out as transgender, all while completing an undergraduate design degree which seemed to be the easiest thing going on at the time. Fast forward to two months ago and I was now proudly presenting the final outcome of my Honours research program which investigated the visual representation of gender diverse communities. And today... I officially graduated from Griffith University, Queensland College of Art and Design with First Class Honours and the University Medal for Academic Excellence. This research not only brought me academic success, but also a reminder of the new doors that can open when you become your true self. It allowed me to collaborate with many wonderful members of the trans community who I cannot imagine never having had the pleasure to meet. It was a privilege to hear your experiences and its very own honour to be trusted to share them. Thank you to everyone who supported me - my supervisors Rae Cooper and David Sargent, the trans community who shared their time and stories, Queer Family Northern Rivers who made that connection possible, and the people around me who have put up with everything the past years have entailed.

A familiar festive favourite has taken on a fresh new look with artist and Queensland College of Art and Design Senior Lecturer, Dr Natalya Hughes, partnering with MECCA Brands and the National Gallery of Victoria to design packaging for the 2024 MECCA Holiday campaign. With one in three people in Australia expected to see the packaging under their Christmas tree, and the designs fronting stores across the country, the annual campaign has seen the beauty retailer take a break from their iconic pink packaging, to this year explore the theme of ‘together we shine’. Dr Hughes’ practice has always focused on the potential of decoration and ornamentation, so it was fitting for her vibrant and evocative work to be selected for such a visible moment.?Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gTfecHe7 Images courtesy of MECCA.

Now that the dust has settled I just wanted to take a moment to say what an incredible journey it has been delivering our 2024 Queensland College of Art and Design Grad Shows across the Gold Coast and Brisbane! With over a thousand attendees on the opening night at SB, we witnessed our talented students shine and share their practices with friends, family, and the broader art and design communities. It's always so heartening seeing our students being supported at their exhibitions (especially when they receive flowers!) ?? ? Thanks to my amazing QCAD Colleagues, especially Kerri Lombaard who is an administrative legend! Large scale events like this are important not only for our students, but to showcase the vital importance of contemporary art and design degrees.
