It's almost here: "A Billion Dollar Dream: The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair on its 60th Anniversary" opens on Sunday, November 3rd! ?? Marking the sixty-year anniversary of the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair, "A Billion Dollar Dream" revisits the Fair through an environmental, social, and political lens. This exhibition takes a fresh look at the Fair’s legacy and impact on American culture by placing materials from the Queens Museum’s collection in dialogue with the context of concurrent domestic issues, international politics, and cultural events. This exhibition reassesses the ways in which ideas of “progress,” nationhood, and representation were advertised and distributed by examining archival photographs, documents, postcards, posters, uniforms, and other ephemera. Together these objects reveal that the Fair was not neutral ground, fluctuating between the promise of a techno-utopia and “the good old days.” Join us for our opening celebration event on Sunday, November 3rd from 1:00pm-5:00pm. ?? Discover “Lyle Ashton Harris: Our first and last love” before the exhibition closes on 09.22.24! “Our first and last love” explores Harris’s critical examination of identity and self-portraiture while tracing central themes and formal approaches in his work of the last 35 years. The artist’s recently-completed “Shadow Works” anchor the exhibition. In these meticulous constructions, photographic prints are set within geometric frames of stretched Ghanaian funerary textiles, along with shells, shards of pottery, and cuttings of the artist’s own hair. “Our first and last love” follows the cues of the Shadow Works’ collaged and pictured elements—which include earlier artworks and reference materials, personal snapshots, and handwritten notes—to shed light on Harris’s layered approach to his practice. Book your ticket today and visit The August Tree shop at the Queens Museum to take home the exhibition catalogue: https://lnkd.in/g9enHnta
