At GiANT, we’ve developed the 5 Voices assessment and training to help team members communicate better with each other. We also focus our training to help team member understand where they fit best into their team’s dynamics. In every organization, there are phases of growth. In each stage of an organization’s development, the different strengths of each Voice are more important for that development than others. In our 5 Voices for Teams training, we talk about at which phases different Voices should be taking the lead. We call this passing the baton. Startup The first phase of development is the startup phase. This is when the business is first getting off the ground and needs the creative and future-oriented personalities to be the primary Voices that the team listens to. This phase requires looking ahead and seeing what’s possible, regardless of the current obstacles, which the Pioneer, Creative, and Connector Voices are all great at. This phase will likely make the present-oriented team members, like the Guardians and Nurturers, uncomfortable. But this is also where there’s some give-and-take. The Nurturers and Guardians will have their time but need to let the future-oriented Voices shine in the startup phase. Establishment The next phase of development is the establishment phase. This is when the uncertainty of the startup phase begins to transition into a time for planning and building. It’s also the time for present-oriented Voices to shine because they’re great at taking the current processes and optimizing them to be more effective for the organization. This will require the same give-and-take on the part of the future-oriented Voices that the present-oriented Voices had to practice during the startup phase. Those future-oriented Voices will need to rein themselves in and trust that, for a time, the present-oriented Voices are best for the organization’s long-term success. Expansion Of course, this is a cycle, so after an establishment phase comes an expansion phase. The expansion phase is similar to the startup phase. The organization is trying out new ideas, products, and services to see what works and what doesn’t. It’s adapting to changes in the economic environment or marketplace. Just like the original startup phase, the future-oriented Voices will be best at directing this phase for the organization. The concept we focus on when we’re discussing this framework with teams is that each Voice has a time when they need to be the leading Voice. And the Voices that aren’t in their dominant phase need to be willing and ready to listen to what the others have to say. Understanding these phases and each Voice’s place in them is a great way to help the different Voices on your team work together.
