For this month’s installment of #TechnicalTuesday, we are highlighting a white paper by Quartus Engineering’s own Joshua Gorfain.?In this white paper, you will learn about how frangible joints provide controlled separation of continuous structural connections on aerospace systems such as launch vehicles, rockets, and spacecraft. These devices are critical to mission success as they enable inter-stage separation and payload delivery. Severance of the joint is governed by an explosive-induced impulsive loading that drives dynamic fracture of a structural member. The prediction of frangible joint performance was studied, in terms of shock output and severance, using nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis. Physics-based simulation of fundamental device behavior was validated relative to open-source experimental data. Sensitivities of device separation performance and shock output to joint structural material properties were subsequently explored to better understand these complex devices. Quartus recently delivered a state-of-the-art stereo-pair vision system to Intuitive Machines for their testing and demonstration campaign conducted near Meteor Crater, AZ. This effort supports IM’s Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) proposal for NASA’s Artemis campaign, and the associated robotic system integrated with the LTV. ? Quartus’ advanced camera system captures high-resolution images of the worksite and processes them into highly accurate point-cloud data, facilitating enhanced site awareness, optimized robotic trajectory planning, and efficient rock retrieval operations. ? The accompanying video showcases the robotic system executing a “hand-eye” calibration, a critical process to accurately determine the orientation and position of the robotic arm with respect to the vision system.

Quartus is proud to support Intuitive Machines' Lunar Terrain Vehicle development, an effort to advance lunar mobility as part of NASA's Artemis campaign. Together, we have been working on the development of the Ground Demonstration Robotic Manipulator and its tools, including a prototype scooping and sieving instrument designed for scientific sample curation.
