The advent of quantum computing creates a new cybersecurity challenge for financial institutions, as quantum computers will one day become powerful enough to break many of the cryptographic algorithms currently used to protect data and communications. Most notable is the ability for quantum computers to run Shor’s algorithm, which threatens many of the commonly deployed encryption methods used to protect messaging. Running Shor’s algorithm requires a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC), which is likely still years in the future. However, the concept of “harvest now, decrypt later” means that encrypted data taken today compounds the overall risk. Furthermore, the technology upgrade path to post-quantum security readiness will take many years. Financial institutions need to take steps today to mitigate future risks. There are two technologies that provide different forms of security against a CRQC: post-quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution. They offer different benefits and, if combined, may provide increased protection. PsiQuantum has announced a partnership with the State of Illinois, Cook County, and the City of Chicago to build the first US-based utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer at the former US Steel South Works property in the City of Chicago. - Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, IQMP,?will catalyse the state’s quantum ecosystem, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Chicago, the Chicago Quantum Exchange, Argonne and Fermi national labs and DARPA, the US Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Project Agency. - The Illinois state budget for the fiscal year 2025, includes USD 500 mn committed to the development of the Quantum Park, including USD 200 mn for the build-out of a cryogenic plant to serve the cooling needs for PsiQuantum and other users. - This follows the April 2024 announcement by the?Australian Commonwealth and Queensland governments?for a USD 620 mn financial package for PsiQuantum to build the first utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer in Brisbane, Australia. #qin #quantuminvestorsnetwork #quantum https://lnkd.in/dBhrQxxC
