If you've spent time reading about finance (quant or otherwise), you've likely heard about sell side and buy side. What's the difference between them? ?? In short sell-side firms?sell?financial services while buy-side firms?buy?financial services. Great, super helpful. To be a bit more specific, sell side firms provide financial services - things like stock offerings (i.e. they help companies IPO), mergers and acquisitions, custody of assets, market and investment research. Another service sell side firms provide, which is perhaps their most important is?market making. Yes, market making is a service. On the other hand, buy side firms are those which purchase securities or other investments either on behalf of clients or for themselves.?The primary purpose of this purchasing is to profit off of an increase (or decrease, if they've gone short) in the value of these investments. If you found this insightful, it's time to drop a follow. Now.

Should you cap (lie for the uncs/aunts out there) about your graduation date? ?? The trend of applying with a fake graduation date (ex: 2026 instead of 2027 to represent yourself as a junior) is increasing in popularity. ?? Potentially hot take? Don't lie about it. ? 1) The year you graduated high school is easily able to be found on a background check, which often occurs before internships and full-time roles ?? 2) If you do end up getting a return offer and can't graduate by the end of next year, you'll have to turn it down, often blacklisting you from the company ?? 3) If you need to recruit for new grad roles, it's an awkward conversation to say that you didn't get an offer ?? Play smart, safe, and honest. Follow Quantable to learn how to land roles without needing to lie.

The good, the bad, and the ugly: 2024 quant intern recruiting cycle edition ?? GOOD: Traditional brainteasers are fading away. Bye bye ?? The focus is on probability (both roles), statistics and data science (for QR), and market making/mock trading (for QT). BAD: Recruiting starts and ends earlier ?? We anticipate that the 2025 recruiting cycle will start mid June and be nearly wrapped up by mid October, approximately a 2 week shift forward from this year. UGLY: There are less full-time recruiting for new grads ?? A larger portion of new grad classes are coming from internships, with some firms not even opening new grad opportunities! Any others you'd add from your experience? To get early insights as discovery day season approaches, follow Quantable ASAP!

Your quant resume sucks ?? Here's how to fix it (for real this time!) 1) Your resume's format sucks. This could be due to it either being not readable or not being ATS friendly. Our recommendation is to use Jake's resume template on resume.lol, as it's super easy to create and edit. 2) You put list your courses/grades. Potentially a hot ?? take, but listing courses is not worthwhile*: Either they are something you'd be expected to know for the interview, or they are so advanced that you'd likely have trouble answering in-depth questions about them. 3) Your descriptions don't reflect impact. Use your resume to demonstrate exactly the impact you had. Keep it ultra specific and don't be afraid to flex your achievements ?? This leads us to our next point... 4) You put content that is exaggerated beyond belief. No, the strategy you programmed in your intro Python class does not predict stock movements with 92% accuracy ?? Make sure the content is actually believable. 5) You aren't bolding key items Recruiters scan your resume for generally at most 10 seconds. Make sure you bold the key words, phrases, and metrics that you want them to see. To test this, scan your own resume for 10 seconds and see what you learn out of it. Any other tips we missed? Throw them in the comments, and follow Quantable for more tips like these! * For SWE/Data Science positions, you should still like courses.
