Quantum hardware vs. software startups Our recent analysis of investment patterns in quantum technology highlights an interesting contrast in funding distribution between hardware-focused, software-focused, and combined hardware-software companies from July 2022 to September 2024. While hardware-focused companies account for the largest percentage of deals (39.2%), software-focused companies are close behind at 35.3%, and combined hardware-software companies make up 25.5% of total deals. Despite the higher number of deals in hardware, the total investment amount tells a different story: combined hardware-software companies lead significantly with $1.8 billion invested, followed by software-focused companies at $981 million, and hardware companies at $647 million. The distribution also reflects the maturity of these startups. Hardware companies tend to be in pre-seed through Series B stages, meaning smaller, early-stage investments. In contrast, software-focused companies like SandboxAQ, QunaSys and Riverlane have progressed to Series C and D rounds, attracting larger sums. This difference in maturity levels partially explains the larger total investment in software. Notably, the combined hardware-software category saw a substantial boost from PsiQuantum’s $617 million Series E round in Q2 2024. This major deal, primarily funded by the Australian government, significantly raised the overall investment in companies working across both hardware and software. While this large infusion of capital is a unique case due to its public funding source, it doesn’t alter the broader trend of increasing investor interest in integrated quantum solutions. As the quantum industry evolves, we may see an increasing alignment in funding amounts across hardware and software, driven by the maturation of each sector and the emergence of more full stack companies. Within the Qu-Test and Qu-Pilot projects, we are diligently tracking all global investments and deals in the quantum technology sector. Our goal is to regularly share updates, so stay tuned for more valuable insights to quantum founders, investors, and professionals alike. Keep an eye on further insights! Is the size of quantum deals growing? We’ve analyzed how the different series rounds (Seed, Series A, B, C, D, E) in quantum startups have shifted from 2022 through 2024, raising the question of whether there’s a clear trend of increasing deal sizes. Are the average deal sizes within the different rounds growing, signaling increasing maturity of the market? Seed rounds, while generally smaller in scale, have shown steady and gradual increases, maintaining a reliable trajectory. Series A deals also follow a relatively stable path, with only minor fluctuations in late 2023. The consistency in early-stage rounds suggests a sustained interest in nurturing early innovation within quantum startups, even during periods of broader market caution. Where we see more volatility is in the mid-stage rounds. Both Series B and C rounds experienced notable dips in average deal sizes during late 2023, likely reflecting investor caution as market conditions fluctuated. However, the beginning of 2024 marked a turning point, with average deal sizes climbing sharply in these rounds. By mid-2024, both Series B and C rounds posted their largest average deal sizes in years, signaling that investors are regaining confidence and committing more significant amounts to support scaling quantum companies. While some quarters saw smaller average deal sizes, the data suggests that this was more of a temporary recalibration than a long-term trend. As the market matures and quantum startups progress beyond their early stages, investors appear willing to back them with larger sums, particularly as technologies inch closer to commercialization. AMIRES is organizing a #Quantum Investment Session as a side-event of this year’s European Quantum Technology Conference (#EQTC2024) and we would like to invite you to participate. ? ? This will be a great opportunity to: 1) Learn about the quantum technology investment landscape. 2)?Meet fellow companies / investors from the ecosystem. 3)?Pitch your company to investors / find and meet new investment targets. ? The intention is to have an intimate, “closed club“ type of session for a limited number of participants composed exclusively of start-ups and investors. So if you’re interested, grab your spot early by registering at this link: https://lnkd.in/dEX99n5g. ? Please note this is a side-event of EQTC and will take place in its premises (exact room will be communicated to the registered participants at a later stage), therefore registration to EQTC is a mandatory pre-requisite to participating in the Quantum Investment Session. How has the quantum investments scene been changing over the quarters? We’ve tracked global investments in quantum startups from the second half of 2022 through the first half of 2024. Although the number of deals in the third and fourth quarters of 2023 was higher, the total amount invested was significantly lower. This is because these quarters saw more low-volume deals, unlike other periods, which featured substantial Series C, D, and E rounds. In Q3 and Q4 of 2023, the number of deals is significant, but they all amount to $389 – a sum much lower than in other periods where less deals took place. This contract can be explained by major late-stage investments done in late 2023/early 2024. These include a $500 million Series D investment in the U.S.-based startup SandboxAQ by Breyer Capital, T. Rowe Price, and TimeVentures and a $617 million Series E round for PsiQuantum, another U.S. startup, supported by the Australian National Quantum Strategy budget. The shift to smaller deals in late 2023 suggests caution in the market, but the large investments in SandboxAQ and PsiQuantum show the potential for big bets on promising startups. It is, however, once again showing a trend of American startups making fewer deals, but of higher value, while European companies tend to secure more deals, but with smaller investment amounts.?? The "Future of Computing – Made in NRW" conference, held on July 2, 2024, at the Forschungszentrum Jülich Research Centre highlighted North Rhine-Westphalia's (NRW) advances in neuromorphic, high-performance, modular supercomputing, edge, and quantum computing. Organised by Cluster NanoMikroWerkstoffePhotonik.NRW, Attendees, including our colleague Robert Harrison, from science, industry, and politics discussed these technologies' roles in driving digital innovation forward. The German state’s focus on key technologies like nanotechnology, microsystems, and photonics enhances global competitiveness and resource efficiency across sectors, will support future economic resilience. ? In addition to meeting several clients, Rob was promoting the European Union’s QU-TEST & QU-PILOT projects. EU-based companies can now apply for support under the current open calls to use pilot lines and test quantum devices. Further details can be found on the home pages of the projects.
